Nic went car-lite in an effort to save money. With housing costs high, he put his sights on reducing his transportation costs. Nic started commuting by bike, and slowly swapped car trips for bike and transit. Though inconvenient transit schedules and car-oriented infrastructure have presented challenges, now most all of his tasks, including Costco runs, are done by bike or transit. He attributes his new-found transportation habits to better mental and physical wellbeing, and feels more connected with his community outside of a car. Nic uses the money he saves on transportation to indulge in things he enjoys, like traveling, and was even able to save up and purchase a home. Nic WestendorfTwo bikes lent up against a lamp post on a MAX platform with a train in the background. Quote: "It’s amazing what a couple bike bags, a basket, and some straps/ bungees can accomplish."

Shawne Martinez, wearing a helmet, riding his front-load cargo bike with several other riders in the background. It's orange with a blue wooden box that reads 'ONE LESS CAR'. He's towing a three-wheeled, yellow bike trailer with two men sitting in plastic chairs on it."Shawne is car-free, motivated by cost-saving, reducing his emissions, vehicle congestion, and preserving the environment for his daughter. He has traveled over 27,000 miles over the last four years without a vehicle, accomplishing everyday feats, a 26 mile round-trip commute, hauling groceries, children, library books, and even moving households by bike. While longer trips require a bit more planning to coordinate transfers and bikes-on-board policies, not having to worry about driving, parking and the cost of fuel far outweighs the complexities. Shawne enjoys being able to read, scroll through social media, and soak in the views without the stress of driving and traffic." Banner: "Shawne Martinez, @Tigard_Stripes"
