自2011年起，@联合国 于每年6月23日庆祝#国际丧偶妇女日，以吸引人们关注丧偶妇女的处境，倾听她们的声音，并给予她们所需的特别支持。
尽管全世界有超过2.58亿丧偶妇女，但她们一直在社会中得不到重视和支持。丧偶妇女可能被剥夺#继承权，在伴侣死后被#剥夺财产，并可能被视为疾病的“携带者”，受到极度的污名和歧视。在世界范围内，妇女获得@老年养恤金 的可能性比男子低得多，因此，配偶的死亡可能导致老年妇女的#贫困。
国际丧偶妇女日为采取行动全面实现丧偶妇女的权利，承认其社会地位提供了一个空前的机遇。这包括向她们提供有关公平获得#遗产、#土地 和#生产资源 的信息；基于#婚姻状况 的#养老基金 和#社会保障；体面工作和#同工同酬；#教育 和培训机会。社会各界应努力增强丧偶妇女的权能，使她们有能力养活自己和家人，还需要消除使她们遭受排斥、歧视或有害做法的社会污名。
