I've seen dozens of not hundreds of posts over recent years with people complaining about GoogleTV's or FireTV's "ad-riddled" interfaces. I have so many streaming services that if I didn't have banners telling me what just arrived on service X I'd have no way of ever knowing about it until maybe days or weeks down the line. I for one appreciate these interfaces. Ads sure, but also *news*.

Part of the reason Amazon Fire TV devices are so cheap is that Amazon uses the home screen for ads and to direct you to its own apps and services. So the company tries to block you from using third-party launchers.
