It's a half dog half something undefined version of a guard animal. There are typically are couple of them, one on either side of the path leading to the shrine. We are looking at the one on the right hand side. It's sitting on a stone pedestal at about hip height and is about 75cm or 2.5ft tall. It's made from a cast in bronze. It's left leg must have been damaged and has been replaced by wood carved in the right shape.

Lovely big shrine atop a hill. Built from wood, the timeframes painted bright red, everything else white. There are brass highlights as well. The roof is dark turquoise. The sun is behind it. In the shade in front of the shrine are two stone lanterns. The left one is partially obscured by the rack for wishes/horoscopes being tied after reading. A handful of trees in the background and almost perfect blue sky.
