Hi folks! If you'll be at #chi2025 this year, come check out my new paper "Intra, Extra, Read all about it: How Readers Interpret Visualizations with Intra- and Extratextual Information"!

It's an exploratory interview study examining how students combined information in the visualization (intratextual) with information they already knew (extratextual) to make meaning.

ReVISit 2.0 (revisit.dev) has reached several exciting milestones recently:

📁 Define an **entire** experiment in a single file-- (visualizations, data, study sequence, questionnaires, etc.)

🛫 Pilot and iterate on the experiment within a notebook environment.

📈 Test data collection and prototype your analyses in the same notebook!

See it in action in this clip, where we replicate a correlation perception experiment in ~160 lines of Python.

💻 Code available here ➡️ github.com/revisit-studies/rev

A young researcher at Northeastern University is doing a survey of crafters and makers.

Have you used data, or represented data, in your work?

Here is the link to the details and survey. I think it's cool that someone finds data + craft a worthy topic of research. And I like to help students.

@Birdbassador There's a paper called "Fourteen Steps to Writing an Effective Discussion Section" from SF Edit which I found really helpful in grad school for better understanding what a discussion section should actually *do*! It's not vis/HCI specific, but I think most of the advice there does align with what I would expect to see in a good discussion for that community.

#3025 - Phase Change

This comic is a graph with the y-axis showing temperatures ranging from 10°C to -10°C. The 0°C mark is highlighted with a bold dashed line. Above 0°C is labelled as "Bouba" (showing a smooth water droplet, ripples and splashes of liquid water, rounded drips of water falling from an edge), below 0°C as "Kiki" (showing snowflakes, icicles hanging down, sharp, angular ice cubes, jagged icebergs).

Caption at the bottom: "When water's temperature falls below 0°C, it undergoes a phase transition from Bouba to Kiki."

Hidden text: "Even when you try to make nice, smooth ice cubes in a freezer, sometimes one of them will shoot out a random ice spike, which physicists ascribe to kiki conservation."

@Birdbassador The Background in @evanmpeck 's Data Is Personal is a good example of a Background I genuinely like. For me, I find Backgrounds enjoyable to read when it feels like the authors already did the digesting of the sources and figured out what info I *really* need to understand and find their results and methods interesting.
