If your plots are getting tangled and your characters are falling flat then your readers won't have a good time. You want the best book possible! A developmental edit will give you the tools you need to free your fantasy novel of inconsistencies and strengthen your writing style. By the end, you will be saying "Yes! That's exactly the story I was trying to tell!

I’ve got it in my head that I’m capable of running 26.2 miles. Running has done so much for me over the last year.

In October, I will be running the Yorkshire Marathon and I will be raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support while I train. 98% of Macmillan's funding comes from people like you who donate to campaigns just like this one. My fundraising goal is £450.

A QR code is on the right side. The poster features the Macmillan Cancer Support logo and a Fundraising Regulator badge.

@Emmacox Thank you so much for sharing! 😊

@Emmacox Yes! I came across it when reading other people's thoughts on the series. It has made me want to research what is different about the structure of a novel versus the folklore that inspires it!

I enjoy reading books that aren’t my typical taste to see why so many other people love them so much. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas is one of these. What can writers learn about genre and plot beats.

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin is a brilliant example of how you can use an unreliable narrator to your advantage in your writing.

AJ Editorial Services is four years old! I can’t believe how far I have come. 2024 was my most successful business year so far by every metric.

My favourite metric is enjoyment. I made a list of every book I have worked on in the last 12 months and worked out I had a whopping 85% enjoyment rate.

If the coming year very simply holds more of the same, the same incredible authors and the same amazing community of editors around me, then I would be delighted.

My approach to New Year’s resolutions is unsustainably maximalist. I refuse to do anything to rectify this. I will only ever dream big and see what happens! But rather than throwing my never ending list of silly thoughts at you (one item on the list is literally just “wear perfume more”), I’ve picked three to share with you.

My last goal is cheating a bit since I already have some excellent manuscripts booked in!

Book post! It was actually my husband's order, but I couldn't resist this adorable little book.

How widely do you read? When I work on developmental editing with authors, I find it near impossible not to recommend books beyond the genre that they write. There is so much to learn from so many writers. Sticking to what you know feels limiting.

As a fantasy author, what are the benefits of having a specialist editor rather than a general editor?

Well, crafting an immersive fantasy narrative demands meticulous attention to detail and a keen understanding of the genre's unique nuances. A specialist fantasy author with genre-specific expertise can transform your manuscript.
