Rule Two: Enjoy writing. As an author or writer, you are going to spend a lot of time . Enjoy it. ...Keep Writing. Write for yourself too. Enjoy the stories and the characters. - Wrtr

12 Feb 'advice for a fellow writer'

The famous novelist W. Somerset Maugham said “There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”

I say there are a whole bunch of rules that I follow, but they are rules which I have prepared, and they are for me only.

Develop a system of your own, for only you, and quote Somerset Maugham at anybody who challenges your unique approach.

1934 Photo of Somerset Maugham from Wikipedia

A dour looking Englishman with jacket and diamond patterned tie wearing a handerchief in the breast pocket. His stripey shirt has a plain white collar. He has slicked back hair, deep set eyes and a gentle frown. Garden shrubs in the background.

WOW.

Thank you, folks, for all the boosts! I didn't expect that kind of engagement.

Perhaps I should have, but I didn't.

You all rock.

I've realised today that the only place I truly relax is inside a story

It can be my own story or someone else's - writing, editing, reading - it doesn't matter. Inside a story, everything else falls away and I am, for that time at least, completely at peace. It is an escape, a refuge

It is why I write and why I read

IF you are a fiction writer, especially of genre fiction, and

IF you would like to work with a professional editor who eschews the use of AI for writing or editing, and

IF you have a final draft sitting somewhere, that's been read by your trusted team of beta readers (you do have beta readers, don't you?), whether it's a short story or a 150K-word novel,

THEN

I might be the editor you're looking for. My specialties are SF/F, historical, horror, thriller, action/adventure, and weird (think William Hope Hodgson, Lovecraft, Blackwood, etc.). It's horror but not pure. It's . . . weird.

Yes, I'm mostly retired, but I'm not gone. I'd love to work with the right client! I've edited for clients around the world, so no worries if you're not in the US (I envy you, these days).

Maybe that is you.

11 Feb usual birthday song

On the day their relationship germinated Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight” is what brought Conning and HayWire together (thanks to Marcus at the Piano)

P.S. birthday songs are not a big thing in Wolfland, but every couple has their own personal song (and Marcus can play them all).

11 Feb 'MC POV: What do you see in your mind’s eye?'

As they explain to Mr Wood during KristalClear's first "get to know his dad" session …

The two MCs KristalClear and NutJob have the same vision, they see themselves together with their happy children, all enjoying the horses in their own paddock.

SlenderWolf Conflicts and Alliances

Chapter 40
The CounterPlexity Ball

“That sounds good, and your ambition eventually, is to run your own equestrian centre?”

“Yes, my dreamy ideal! If Papa can help me get started.”

“I know your dad, Henri Troyes, he banks with us. He probably doesn’t know that I’m Dave’s father though! My badge just says Aspen.”

Here’s the scenario. You want to write a book, but you don’t know what to include or how to organize it. You know a lot about your topic of interest, maybe too much. Your mind is full of ideas and overflowing with questions:

How do you fit all of those ideas into a book?
Do you even have enough for a full book?
Should you write two books, or maybe three?
How will you get it published?

Read the post to find out how a mind map can help!
