This is the most amazing interactive map I have come across lately. The interface is simple. Put in a city and see what other place it will be most like in climate in 60 years, when today's children will be seniors, at current rates of carbon burning. The results are shocking - completely different biomes. Then you can compare that with what happens if we reduce emissions. fitzlab.shinyapps.io/cityapp

i made a thing.

a "local" colour-map generator that gets the 'average' colour between each contour from satellite imagery.

because viridis just won't do.

this opens the door to seasonal colourmaps...

Two plots of elevation data in a mountainous region in northern Italy.

The colours on the left plot are taken from a satellite image acquired in March, the colour map goes from light brown to brown, grey and then white with increasing elevation.

On the right hand plot the colours come from a satellite image acquired in August, and the colours go from light green to dark green, grey and then white.

In August the area coloured in white (high elevation snow cover) is less than in march.

It's been a long time since I did any mapping for fun. I spent a bit of time this weekend with elevation data in QGIS and did a couple renders of the North Saskatchewan river through Edmonton. might eventually import into Affinity for more/other design options and less tedious line-to-polygon adaptation...

California is recognized as one of the world’s hotspots of biodiversity, and many of our ecosystems depend on groundwater. Scientist Melissa Rohde has spent years coming up with strategies for protecting ecosystems that could be pumped dry.

“Nature has been getting the short end of the stick. It basically gets whatever is left behind, which oftentimes is not enough,” Rohde said. “How do we ensure that these ecosystems are protected?” latimes.com/environment/story/

@CWilbur Ah! Well, Journey North tracks a lot of migrations and the monarch migration isn't the only one it tracks. You can report first sightings of robins, Painted Lady butterflies, hummingbirds etc.

@jarosenfield @sfbaykeeper
"...wetter conditions gave way to increasing aridity during the past 2,000 years, a general trend punctuated by occasional prolonged and severe droughts and occasional unusually wet, cool periods. CA’s climate since A.D. 1850 has been unusually stable and benign, compared to climate variations during the previous 2,000 or more years. Thus, climate variations in California’s future may be even more (perhaps much more) challenging than those of the past 100 years."

@jarosenfield @sfbaykeeper flows are related to passage in that many small barriers become passable in higher flows (I know you know this, just rounding out the argument with another reason flows matter). The amount of spawning habitat blocked by dams is astonishing, and isn't talked about enough.

Holocene Climates and Connections is a great read 🤓 for everyone in Bay-Delta policy-land:

@jarosenfield @sfbaykeeper I fully agree restoring flows would be the easiest and best "fix" for native fishes today. However, there have been droughts in CA lasting centuries. Natives have persisted through and rebounded from them. Which makes me think other factors, while not as straightforward to measure or relieve, may serve as impact multipliers *especially* w/ suppressed flows.

Full disclosure: I've been around a lot of beekeepers lately. Striking parallels between fish and bee declines.

Melting polar ice is slowing the Earth's rotation, with possible consequences for timekeeping

A new study found that ice loss caused by climate change is redistributing mass on the Earth enough to alter its spin.

@jarosenfield @sfbaykeeper CA fishes are adapted to dramatic swings in env conditions. But they've never had to overcome so much all at once. Water is a VERY important piece. So are passage barriers, pollution, and competition. Do you think Water Board plans would be adequate if some/all of the other issues got more attention?
