The United States has been a center for #dinosaur discoveries since the bad old days of Cope and Marsh. But few finds rival the scale of Howe's Quarry in Wyoming.
In a 1934 expedition lead by Barnum Brown, a team from the AMNH dug up over 4,000 specimens in six months. The dig was also one of the earliest to create a bone map, showing the placement of each #fossil. None of the specimens were removed until the map was complete and it has become a standard practice in #paleontology
"It’s only natural to peer into the dark unknown and ask what could possibly go wrong. It’s equally necessary—and more essentially human—to do so and envision what could possibly go right." https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/01/chatgpt-ai-technology-techo-humanism-reid-hoffman/672872/
I am officially deceased after reading this Wall Street deli owner's response to the question of whether he asks his customers for stock tips:
Chuir mé ríomhphost chuig duine inniu agus mé ag obair (as Béarla). Fuair mé freagra as Gaeilge as bhí comhfhreagras againn. Ní raibh aon choinne leis ach ba mhaith ann é!
Got a nice surprise today in work when an email was replied to in Irish!

As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself rewritten in Rust for performance reasons.
So there was draw a dinosaur day and Tarbosaurus is one of my fav dinos. I illustrated this guy a few times already and each time he gets more familiar to draw.
I did this art with a genuine spark of energy. I miss my energy so much :')

Quick Dilophosaurus headshot for a coloring page! The goal of the activity is to draw in an interpretive crest.

Me on Facebook: See a friends work of art like it.
Facebook: Here is a flood of similar art day after day until your vomit and you'll never see your friend again.
Me on Mastodon: See a friends work of art and I like it.
Mastodon: Business as usual until friend posts another work of art and I see that and like that.
Insect fossils blow me away because squishy things typically don't preserve well, except under specific conditions. This one, from the Messel Pit in Germany, is exceptional: It's a fly with a belly full of pollen.
Yellow blobs in the image on the far left are the last meal this fly ate 48 MILLION YEARS AGO. Its body is so well-preserved that scientists could even tell what type of pollen it was 😱 https://cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(21)00232-3 #FossilFriday #fossil #insects #paleontology

The weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Coronosaurus
Found in two bone beds in the Oldman Formation, Coronosaurus was excavated between 1996 and 2000. It was first described in 2005.
White it has a very dominant nasal horn, it also has two smaller brow horns over its eyes. This combined with a frill that has a number of accessory epiparietal ossifications give Coronosaurus is name, Crowned Lizard.
Its believed where it was found was a coastal plain.
Happy #FossilFriday ! Here's a look at one of just a few theropod teeth that have been found at SGDS. While these teeth would of had serrations along the outer edge when new, all the teeth we find have been worn down!

For #FossilFriday meet Homaloneurites - this ~302 million year old #insect is neat because the #colour pattern on its wings are preserved. It was discovered in the late 1800s in Commentry, #France, and is a member of a broader group, the Palaeodictyoptera. These insects look superficially like #dragonflies: they have two pairs of wings that stick out laterally from the body. Unlike dragonflies, though, which are predators /
Focal an lae: ceobhránach, misty, drizzly, clouded over. A lovely word, and perfect to describe today in Vancouver! Pronunciation here: https://www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/ceobhránach
The Bertie fossil sites are filled with sea scorpions and other invertebrates. Yet standing alone among them is Nerepisacanthus. This nearly complete fish gives critical insight to vertebrate evolution before their dominance.

The closest exoplanet to Earth is only 4.2 light-years away. It's an Earth-sized world in the habitable zone of its small star, meaning liquid water *could* exist on the surface. Now, a possible second planet, Proxima Centauri c, is awaiting confirmation! https://go.nasa.gov/3woVXTu

As a Board Member for the Glazer Children's Museum, I'm thrilled to share that the museum will host Big John, the world's largest triceratops fossil! The exhibit will be for ALL AGES and open on Memorial Day weekend 2023. This treasure of paleontology is coming for a long-term stay in Tampa Bay. Learn more: https://www.bigjohndino.com/
