Black-Capped Chickadees, anyone?

If you’re itching to get off line for a bit, there are worse things to do than write a letter on pretty paper.

So today, a group of elementary school children paraded through my neighborhood. I knew they were there because they were quite loud and energetic, and honestly I was very confused about what was happening. I mean, what on earth kind of field trip are they doing, wandering around from house to house?

I tried to see what they were up to, and I couldn’t really tell.

But after they’d passed, my husband opened the door to our back porch because it was a lovely day and the sun was out. And hanging on the doorknob was a handcrafted paper plate basket of paper flowers.

And it struck me—they were celebrating May Day.

And I got a surge of nostalgia. Growing up in the midwest of the US, my family celebrated the first of May as a sort of polar opposite to Halloween. We’d make paper cups and fill them with flowers and candy, deliver them secretly to the neighbors we loved, and run away quickly before they discovered them. No notes. No indication of where they came from or whom they came from.

And here, in Eureka, CA, 40 years later, was an entire elementary school class doing it as an organized activity.

I took that paper basket, and I put it on a hook on my refrigerator, to remind me of a different kind of sustenance than food.

Caring for others with no expectations.

I really really hope that elementary school class teacher knows how much they touched me. Because they restored a bit of my faith in humanity today.

I woke up really stressed this morning, way too early at 4:30am. I decided to jump into getting something constructive done.

I have three tasks today, and now I’ve completed my first: get all the paper stationery packs I’ve made listed on my Goimagine shop. I’ve been sitting on these for almost a year, and now I told myself I needed to get them available.

Done. Whew!

I’ll be sharing these individually, of course, but I’m really happy they’re all up. Product photography got to be a routine methodical system after a bit, which was a blessing! I’m terrible at it! LOL!

Anyway, it’s done! I’m gonna take a nap now.

Got this done on my livestream today: ā€œThe Tortoise and the Hareā€.

I realized as I was making it that all of my art is rather edgy dark… It sort of straddles fantasy art and kidlit topics and nestles into a weird middles ground that I kind of like.

Even my birds! All spotlighted and surrounded by rich jewel tones… I hadn’t realized it until it hit me today, mid-stream. Huh.

Anyway, I also made this piece into a new greeting card! Woohoo!

@Tamami I deeply connect with what you’re saying. I even mentioned it on my blog: if you voted for him my art is not for you.

I truly believe that the best thing going for artists in today’s world is connecting our work to us as creators and what we believe, who we are, etc. In the face of so much artificially generated slop, the future of art is in its human origin. We have to consistently lean into our humanity to differentiate our work, especially to so many who can’t tell the difference. Our beliefs, values, perspectives—that’s what separates us from machines. That’s what makes us artists.

So yes. I am 1000% in agreement. We must—MUST—express our whole selves as artists, especially in today’s world where our humanity is at risk of being lost.

This one is in the show too.
Sometimes, I put outrageous prices on pieces I like. This one is $700, and I have two pieces that I priced at $1,700. It's not that I think they deserve such crazy price tags; it's more about I'd rather keep them. I am also afraid of selling my pieces to someone I don't like. Yes, I know, that's totally unprofessional and immature. 1/🧵

@josh Ok, so I’ve subscribed to only a few through my Mastodon account… I’ve mostly subscribed to them through my PeerTube account on MakerTube.

There’s no real way I can simply ā€œboostā€ the posts of my subscriptions there with that account onto Mastodon without actually subscribing to those PeerTube accounts with a Mastodon account, is there? I can copy the link, but that’s about it, right? If I want to boost those vids I’ve subscribed to through a PeerTube account, there’s no logistically easy way to make that happen, is there? I’d have to write my own descriptive copy and title to accompany the link, correct?

@josh Oooo, I hadn’t thought of that paradigm… Ouch. This one cuts deep. I didn’t really put 2+2 together to realize this…

I have to boost those vids I subscribe to so they can reach the Fediverse, not just stay on PeerTube... Otherwise they sorta die on the vine. I hadn’t really internalized that…

I see my subscriptions in my Mastodon feed and RSS, but I hadn’t processed what you’re saying… Oy, now I’m embarrassed. I gotta step up on that. Oof.

New blog post on some successes I’ve had lately. They’ve happened quickly, and it’s difficult to share them in a timely fashion because literally each one could be broken down into a single shared post so I figured I’d just combine them all for convenience! Haha!

I got my first actual art stationery paper pack listed on my Goimagine shop.

50 pages of printed paper stationery (two different pages), with 10 assemble-yourself matching paper envelopes.

The pack features an Oriole, with soft pastel texture enhancements.

And it comes lined and unlined!

goimagine.com/illustrated-orio

We’ll see how this goes. My goal is to at least get the other 11 sets I’ve designed available on my shop, since I have those files and can print/pack/ship those easily.

Honestly, I’ve never put anything like this out there, and while I’ve seen downloadable packs all over the place, and thematic notepads of all sizes, I rarely see physical loose leaf printed paper stationery packs for sale.

But I think, perhaps, there is such a strong current against being online that the nostalgic and retro aspect of just writing letters and mailing them can be quite mentally relaxing. People are desperate to unplug and searching for ways to do that but still feel like they’re sharing something and connected.

Fingers crossed!
