If you've done any #astronomy or #astrophotography, you've probably heard of the Messier catalog. If I tell you I'm looking at M13, M101, or M42 you probably know what I'm talking about, but if you're like me, you might not know anything about the astronomical dynamics of those objects.
You also might not know that Brady Haran (same guy that does Numberphile and Sixty Symbols) also has an astronomy channel with a fascinating set of videos about every Messier object.
This is certainly one of the more crazy things in my scientific career. Together with my colleague Gyula Józsa, and other great colleagues from the German astro community (German Astronomical Society, MPIfR, HdA, Uni Potsdam), I will run a Dark and Quiet Skies & Astronomy booth at the Wacken 2025 Space Camp. Hilding Neilson just gave a mind-blowing talk on "Indigenizing the Drake Equation". I will spend a lot of time thinking about this, he made a lot of incredibly good points about how incredibly biased our thinking about searching for aliens is.
Main point: we're not looking for "civilizations", we're looking for breaks from Nature. We can only detect "civilizations" that are like us: doing terrible damage to their environments.

In step with 'Project 2025', which seeks to undermine and erase climate science, Trump is trying to shut down the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. He is doing this as part of an aggressive defunding of NOAA.
Data collected by this observatory since 1958 has been central to nearly every report ever published on our changing climate.
Our home planet may soon lose a canonical reference that it is warming.

A star with a weird color - Nova Lupi 2025 (V462 Lupi)
1st photo is not annotated. Can you find the nova?
2nd photo is annotated.
3rd photo was deliberately mis-focused so that stars were larger disks instead of small points. This makes it easier to see the color.
Note that there are plenty of orange stars and plenty of blue stars...but the nova has a unique color. To my eye it's a pale purple.
Why does the nova have a weird color?
4th image was taken from https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1771205990440705&set=pcb.10056320127790102 it's a spectrum of the nova. Most stars have a blackbody radiation distribution, but novae (that's the Latin form, plural) have strong emission lines at discrete colors. That can make a weird color compared to most stars.

Scariest part:
472 Starlinks were burned up in the atmosphere in Dec-May. Assuming each satellite is 800kg, and 50% aluminum by mass, that's 1 ton of aluminum PER DAY.
The natural infall rate of aluminum from meteoroids is 0.3 tons per day. Starlink has been ~3x that, for the last 6 months.

When this case first came out, I was talking to a relatively senior Finnish journalist about freedom of the press in Finland. We came to the conclusion that Finland's then best in the world ranking on press freedom was entirely down to the fact that the press had never wanted anything that the government wasn't ok with having in the papers. This decision is broadly incompatible with freedom of expression. Prosecuting folks who agreed to keep state secrets is one thing. Accusing journalists of treason, let alone convicting them, for publishing material that in their professional opinion was newsworthy is completely unacceptable. The Finnish national security bureaucracy does and must not be above the constraints of international human rights law, and must not be permitted to either constrain a priori or decide post hoc what is in the national interests. I assume this will be appealed and that the Finnish Supreme Court (or, failing them, the European Court of Human Rights) does the right thing. This case has already caused a significant chilling effect on Finnish journalism — already not in a great position — and this is happening at a time when Finland's national security position and responsibilities are changing rapidly. We need transparency and accountability in the national security bureaucracy now more than ever.
