J. Steven York

Writer, thinker, maker, really tall guy. Man of action. Man of action figures. Life-long space fan. Amateur photographer. Traveler, but not enough. Homebody, and not enough of that either. I collect hobbies, and often make up new ones. Cat lover. Geek in most all things. I've worked extensively in the game industry, and I'm not much of a gamer. I do not speak sportsball.

I lean left, and support the rights of all people based on diversity of color, ancestry, gender, gender identity, and sexuality. You be you, and I will always stand for your rights to do so. Let's try to love each other, difficult though it may be. Do something nice, big or small, for the world each day.

Is it just me, or is this place getting more lively? I'm seeing a lot more interaction in the last month, and the numbers in the "Trending" list seem to be getting higher and the graphs more active. If so, I'm very happy to see it.

A late follow-on to this. My dad passed away recently, and rereading this makes me feel even better about this little project. In the fall, I'll be traveling back to his home in Alabama and plan to start going through his shop. That's going to be hard. My brother, who lives only a quarter mile away from it has told me he hasn't even been able to bring himself to go inside. Maybe the two of us can manage it together.

@Fragglemuppet@fandom.ink There are some of those that still fall off the edge of the genre. The British Bake Off is the gold-standard. The host foolishness is honest foolishness, and the spirit of the thing is cooperative and supportive as opposed to the meanness, designated villains, and trash-talking standard for many shows, especially in the US. There are some editing tricks to up the suspense, but nothing too bad.

@w7voa@journa.host It's a corporate hit piece, nothing more. WaPo is notorious for this type of crap. It's equivalent to saying we should all avoid email, because loads of paedophiles use it. This is a decentralised platform with an open protocol, so of course there's going to be nefarious characters implementing it. There's nothing we can do to prevent that - especially not if they're operating from jurisdictions (in this case Japan) in which their activities are legal.

What we can do is defederate from problem instances, which is why none of us in this thread have seen any child porn on the fedi.

2023-07-25

@w7voa@journa.host I have occasionally (more properly, rarely) seen some porn here, even of the hard-core variety, but nothing child related, and most of it was pretty vanilla, much as I recall. But most of it goes away on its own (with the help of admins I'm sure). I'm pretty open minded, so it generally doesn't bother me personally. Mainly I don't want it popping up on my feed while someone might be looking over my shoulder. Actually, now that I think of it, a lot of the accounts posting porn were actually considerate enough to use a content warning on explicit material. (A bigger problem is that the explicit warnings are SO overused here, often for things inexplicable, that clicking through is almost automatic for me without some contrary context outside the hidden material.) But overall, I'd say this is a much "cleaner" environment that most of the more traditional services I am using, or have used. Certainly, the aggressive come-ons that likely lead to more explicit or harmful material, are at plague level over on the Meta products, and we will not even discuss the xbird.

The street I grew up on (in the Seattle suburbs) is being renamed for the sci-fi writer Octavia E. Butler! And I helped to make it happen!

This is fabulously exciting.

Let me tell you the secret of the "Everything App".

It's real, it's not called X, and it's about 33 years old. It's called a Web Browser.

Despite a decade of walled gardens trying hard to ruin it, you can still do pretty much any task you need on the web.

You can even make websites into apps with Progressive Web Apps (two clicks on WordPress).

The everything app is old, and under siege daily. But it works, it's resilient, and it's magical.

* QUESTION

is there a spreadsheet of how much it costs to run a instance based on # of users & activity?

i would like to see numbers from the hundreds to the millions

it would be cooler if we could have that information extended to all the other platforms: and amma gonna throw in in case there's any instances using ActivityPub & federating

(* lazyfedi is my take on the legendary asks from blogging days)

@RickiTarr@beige.party When they start talking about "reality TV" in anything but an ironic way. If they fail to understand, in at least some small way, the artifice, made up story overlay, and emotional manipulation, I figure they likely have been drinking other, more dangerous forms of the Kool-Aid. At the very least, I may feel obliged to try and educate them, and that almost never goes well. And worst of all, they may expect me to watch it with them, and the tropes are like fingernails on chalkboard to me.

Brian Tatosky, from the VFX Department of Star Trek Picard Season 3 saying no doubt something stupid about the show he loves.

A perfect opportunity to finally add Mastodon or Fediverse buttons.

The New York Times wrote up WGA StrikeShirts and the cause. Nice work, @jessicaroy.

nytimes.com/2023/07/21/style/w

The shirts are all union printed and all net proceeds go to the Entertainment Community Fund to help support those impacted by the strikes. I’ve been happy to help them with some SAG-AFTRA designs.
