I stumbled on a great way to convince my students that I could always tell if they turned in writing done by AI. It was pretty clever and it worked well. Here's how I did it and you can do it too: http://www.litandtech.com/2023/06/how-i-convinced-my-students-that-i.html

I want to make less trash and I've started blogging about the changes I'm making to reduce the garbage I produce.
Check out https://jenswasteless.blogspot.com/ to follow my progress and maybe get inspired to make less trash yourself.
Today I learned that a high school senior will do a lot of classwork if it means getting a chance to play with a small bowl of lego for ten minutes at the end of class.
@MrsDi I love the videos interspersed. Thank you for sharing this presentation! The resource collection I'm working on with the Writing Across the Curriculum Collaborative is at https://wac.colostate.edu/repository/collections/ai-text-generators-and-teaching-writing-starting-points-for-inquiry/ if you have any suggestions for that...
@wfryer I’ve given the bot the prompts my students have been writing to for the past month, and the best it did would have scored a D on one essay. On most others it totally failed. But I LOVE the conversations this has started with my colleagues about how/why we teach writing.
@scerruti @DavidKnuffke @aus_teach @edutooters Counseling people out of the teaching pipeline when they clearly don't like working with children is hard to do, and you are absolutely right. Most programs will just keep taking their money and not tell folks they should consider an alternate career.
@DavidKnuffke Valid, but let's also acknowledge that teaching is a challenging, and can be stressful for many. If a test is too stressful, then what happens when that person gets observed/critiqued by a supervisor, challenged by a parent, confronted by a disruptive student. I don't think you have to have superpowers to teach, but you need to be able to deal with tough situations, often daily.
@DavidKnuffke Agreed, but there is still a very detailed credential portfolio that candidates in Cali need to submit to earn a credential, on top of course requirements, student teaching etc.
The vibe in my classroom today is collaborative vocabulary discussions as we start a new unit.
