Oh oh oh! Here's a great read I haven't done in a few years!

This guy was one of the #HamRadio BBS operators in the bay area during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and he describes the project of trying to keep the packet network flowing as everyone and their uncle tried to send welfare checks into the bay area in a time before the Internet.

@girino @ai6yr Would it even be necessary to have a lot of object storage for a time-sensitive bot? Isn’t there an account setting to delete old posts? Text search isn’t very good, so why hang onto what cannot be found?

The holiday feels a bit strange these days. The roots of the holiday are a celebration of gratitude, yet we Americans have transformed it into a day of gluttony and sloth (for those not preparing the meal).

@g0vax The general American spin is Thanksgiving was held by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in North America (because they experienced a difficult first year in the new world). The holiday is religious in origin, but largely secular today. Like any historic myth, there are other angles as to what happened around that time which have been erased from or ignored in the narrative.

Even as a #radio enthusiast, I've had massive problems really understanding the notion of #impedance. I can do the math, but it doesn't really internalize, and I'm always thinking about it in a manner similar to having to use tongs to do a jigsaw puzzle.

Until yesterday, when someone describing why an explosion in the air doesn't move into water easily, and the same for an explosion in water:

It's an impedance mismatch.

And the scales fell from my eyes.
