#ft8

I have 2120 #ft8 which is cool and all but. VarAC is so freaking cool, I've made like 10 contacts but they were real conversations that sometimes went on for an hour.

I did a little bit of FT8 earlier and it was such a perfect illustration of band ranges.

With the sudden appearance of #FT2, I'd like to take the opportunity to announce the new mode FT∞, which is designed to use a bandwidth of 31 yoctoHertz, at a power level of 1 femtowatt.

Unfortunately, the effective throughput is so low that the only message ever sent using this mode started in the Mesozoic Era and has yet to finish. (Rumor has it that it includes the word "destinated", and that one of the parties didn't give their grid square.)

@DJ5CW I, for one, am eagerly awaiting FT⅛, which will require a minimum of 1kW output power as well as a local GPS-disciplined Cesium time standard. (But imagine the throughput! Contesters will be able to win using this one weird trick!)

#HamRadio guy. My #HF system band-hops 160 thru 6meters (10 bands) monitoring #FT8 traffic. On 1 of the bands, the radio needs to change antenna setting. Vibe-coded a python app that queries #flrig for the current frequency & sends command as needed to switch it (pictured).

Linux bash terminal showing history of flipping the radio to a different antenna for 160m, and turning on the preamp. Or switching back.

Also shown, the GUI that shows the current frequency, current antenna port, preamp state, last poll timestamp, last antenna change timestamp.

@croyle

As you know, #TheOldsToday will tell you to stop whining because Back In Their Day they'd wait years for a confirmation & also they were limited to 75 W input & were *rock-bound* on the Novice bands & blah blah blah.

Annoys me, too. #FT8 is, of course, the way & the light. Majority of ops upload to LOTW right away & boom, in 2 years of casual operation at a new QTH you have 112 confirmed. The rest seem to be #olds who don't see why anyone is in a hurry so they wait 4evah to upload.

The last three days of "radio hunting" on the 20-meter band (good old FT8) felt like a world tour without leaving my chair. My DXCC collection is growing faster than my coffee consumption!

Huge thanks to the operators who didn't ignore my digital "pings":

Isle of Man (GD7DUZ) — Country (86), Albania (ZA5G) — Country (87),
Cameroon (TJ1GD) — Country (88),
Nauru (C21TS) — Country (89),
Estonia (ES2DR) — Country (90).

Huge thanks for the successful QSOs.

I don’t always do ft8, but when I do I’m usually testing an antenna. I didn’t send much because I’m inside and it’s a lot, but it looks pretty good for a wire on a wall in the middle of the night.
