I wish you a happy new year!
I was concerned to find very few praying mantis egg sacs around my house this year. This morning, while walking my dog, I discovered one merely 10 cm above the ground surface. Further exploration in our small yard revealed 6 mantis egg sacs, all laid near the ground surface, which is why I couldn’t find them before. I wonder if this year’s prolonged hot summer, followed by rapid cooling, might have caused this 🤔#PrayingMantises #ClimateChange
No party like a termite party.

A female alpine black swallowtail (Papilio maackii) probing flowers of honeyvine milkweed (Cynanchum caudatum). A phone pic, not photoshopped, but still magnificent! #biodiversity #butterflies
Back in Sugadaira for a field course. Grassland flowers and insects are always fun to watch! #biodiversity #grasslands #pollinators #bumblebees
Around this time a year ago I decided to finally get a guitar I’d wanted for a long time. The Hummingbird.
A study found red Euonymus flowers attract fungus gnats for pollination, while white ones draw bees, beetles & brachyceran flies. Dark-red color, short stamens, and acetoin smell might indicate a unique #PollinationSyndrome associated with fungus gnats.

A female clear-wing hawkmoth (Cephonodes hylas) is visiting the Gardenia tree in our yard to lay her eggs. I love watching their super energetic aerial show! The tree already has some larvae living in it as well. #biodiversity #hawkmoths #Sphingidae #garden
Found a dead Japanese jewel beetle (Chrysochroa fulgidissima) in the shrine near our house. It’s a huge one. Wondering how it feels to look so gorgeous even after death. Nature is amazing! #biodiversity #JewelBeetles #beetles #StructuralColor
FINALLY. I’ve spent years trying to capture this.
Allen’s hummingbird at wooly blue curls. This is one of the photos I’m most proud of.
Leaving the building after work, this guy caught my eyes. A beautiful green cicada, Hyalessa maculaticollis, symbolizing midsummer tradition in eastern Japan. Hey, I hope you're enjoying your ultra-short vacation to the fullest! #biodiversity #cicadas
As soon as the loosestrife (Lythrum anceps) in our garden started blooming, a carpenter bee (Xylocopa appendiculata) arrived immediately. Hello, big lady. #biodiversity #garden #bees
Been wandering around Sugadaira Highland, searching for a plant species to be used in a new master’s thesis. Delighted to see many breathtaking blossoms! #biodiversity #grasslands #flowers
