And its Day 6 of the Mull Geology Advent Calendar - easwards we go to the shore at Glengorm. Great views to Ardnamurchan, classic Mull Plateau lava landscape and lots of interesting minor intrusions, esp sills. Coastal scenery is ace. See Alt-text

Animation not working, will try and fix later!
Haven’t managed to post anything for this year’s #30DayMapChallenge, but just in time for the final day, here’s an animation of my time-averaged location, based on how long I’ve lived in the five different cities I’ve called home:
Edinburgh - 18.5 years
Liverpool - 4 years
Albuquerque, NM - 8 years
Lexington, VA - 3 years
Oxford, OH - 3 years
Edinburgh - 5 years
Excitingly for a geologist, I’ll cross back over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in 2032!

In a moment this cloud is going to open their eyes & be really embarrassed about how late they've slept in.
I just saw a post that referred to ChatGPT as "Mansplaining as a service", and it is so wonderfully correct - instant generation of superficially plausible yet totally fabricated nonsense presented with unflagging confidence, regardless of topic, without concern, regard, or even awareness of the expertise of its audience :D #chatgpt #mansplaining #GenerativeAiIsGoingGreat
Happy Exploding Whale Day! On this day, 54 years ago, Oregon State Highway Division decided to remove a stinking dead whale from the beach near Florence using a half ton of dynamite. Hilarity ensues.

#30DayMapChallenge 2024 Day 2: Lines
One of the best days of our Pacific Crest Trail hike was reaching the Three Sisters. We dropped our packs at a good place to camp and loaded up our fanny packs to hike to the summit of South Sister. We backracked on the PCT to the start of the official route. On the way down, we wanted to head straight back to camp, so we headed down the NW side and unintentionally glissaded about 800 meters down the Lost Creek Glacier. #PCT #Oregon #QGIS
Fuck you Elon Musk, even more than ever before you absolute c**t
#MinCup24 kyanite vs rhodochrosite
Vote #kyanite! The glorious blue harbinger of metamorphism done right: high pressure, and aluminous chemisty = beauty + lots of geo-information 🤩 🥰 🤓
Here's some Mull kyanite, together with it's pink cousin andalusite, in an outcrop at Ardalanish in Mull - what a rock! 😊 😍
#MinCup24 Vote kyanite!
Here's a sturdy block of slightly rusty kyanite schist/gneiss in the walls of a ruined house at Uisken, Mull.
This house has a great range of Moine metamorphic lithologies in its walls - almost like they were chosen deliberately.😊

#MinCup24 kyanite vs topaz
A hard call - two fine aluminium orthosilicates. I like both. #Torn
I live on kyanite-grade metamorphic rocks & nice crystals are visible on outcrops within a mile of my house. Seeing kyanite cheers up your day. Any metamorphic rock is improved by having kyanite in it.
But topaz is fancier. It bespeaks exotic fluorine-rich chemistry, with the promise of tungsten, tin, bismuth, niobium & tantalum. And a wonderfully lustrous clear gemstone...
Hmm...🤔

Maybe warmest day of year in Mull today? 24 C? Anyway, here's a nice wee ptygmatically folded quartz vein in a mysterious quartz-amphibole-rich rock band within the Scoor Pelitic Gneiss, (Moine; Proterozoic), from a nice walk this morning (this outcrop was in cool shadow, so no sunny sparkles) #Geology #Mull
#FridayFold seen in a new road cutting near Stornoway.
#Archaean Lewisian gneiss is cut by mafic #OuterHebrides dyke. Both are then folded during the #Laxfordian.
Cross cutting of the gneissic foliation can be seen in the core of the fold, whilst the limbs are concordant.
