I've been doing #chalkart on our front walk since March 2020. One advantage of this is that, without the time and distance constraints of a chalk event, I can change a piece every day or so. It's fun to play with that. Yesterday my front walk featured a May Queen based verrrrry loosely on an Ann Macbeth embroidery from the early 20c. This morning, the May Queen became a Rebel Princess, for a #Maythe4th event. #chalk #PrincessLeia #RebelPrincess #starwars
A colorful chalk drawing on pavement, of three figures meant to resemble Princess Leia, a Jawa, and R2D2, from Star Wars. Leia is holding a blue light saber. The words "Rebel Princess" are written along the top edge of the round frame.A colorful chalk drawing on pavement, of three figures meant to resemble a May Queen and her attendants, in a circle frame. The May Queen is holding a wand of flowers and a bouquet; she also has flowers in her red hair.

Fidget boards? I've seen soft versions with tassels, buttons, zippers, loops, etc. To keep restless hands busy, it seems to be calming for some folks (like a fidget spinner except more).

The simple #quilt I made in April; for a niece who requested blues and greens; the #lace in the center belonged to one of her ancestors, and might have been made by that ancestor too. #quilting #blues #greens #handmade
A simple quilt made from 36 squares arranged in a 6x6 square; the squares are all in blue and green and turquoise prints; there is a blue printed border; there is a five-pointed flower-shaped scrap of antique lace appliqued in the center, over darker squares.

I read with my ears when I'm crocheting, and I read with my eyes when I'm not crocheting. I bounce between the formats with each book, and I have come to prefer that; it feels weird to read with just one "channel" open now, like listening to music in mono vs. stereo. ;)

Thanks! I'm having fun. I'm definitely paying more attention the colors, details in book covers now. Each one is like a bonus puzzle to solve now.

I'm making a book blanket this year; that means a lot of different things, but for me it means crocheting a square inspired by the cover of each book I finish in 2025. I'm assembling them quarterly, so this is the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter. The first photo shows the assembled squares, and the second photo is the books laid out in the same positions. #bookblanket #books #reading #crochet The authors and titles: Melissa Albert, The Hazel Wood; Ezra Claytan Daniels, Upgrade Soul; Lauren Groff, The Vaster Wilds; John Wood Sweet, The Sewing Girl’s Tale; Maja Lunde, The End of the Ocean; Fiona Mozley, Elmet; NoViolet Bulawayo, We Need New Names; Paterson Joseph, The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho; H. G. Parry, The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep; Lily Brooks Dawson, Good Morning Midnight; Lauren Beukes, Afterland.

New #chalkart on our front walk for daughter's birthday--the sixth birthday chalk I've done for her since I started in March 2020. She likes #corgis. #corgi #cavecanem
A chalk drawing of a smiling corgi on pavement, with the words "Happy Birthday Nell" and "cave canem" written around the edges.

I made another small quilt as a gift; recipient requested "something colorful". Some of the fabric including the border is vintage from our shared ancestral stash; some of the thread is too. #quilt #quilting #colorful
A colorful quilt made from 35 squares arranged in a 7x5 rectangle; all of the fabrics are prints, except the center fabric, which is a solid neon yellow; the border is a navy vintage print with orange flowers.

New #chalkart on our front walk right now, loosely based on Waterhouse's 1888 Lady of Shalott; no real resemblance, I know, but it's still sorta recognizable. Pretty pleased to get a white dress looking white on our dark pavement. #Waterhouse #LadyofShalott
A chalk drawing on pavement, based on John William Waterhouse's The Lady of Shalott (1888); a woman with voluminuous red hair, looking sad, wearing a white dress, seated in a boat

The quilt I finished on the patio at @gallifreyone@mastodon.world this weekend. Because sometimes the fabric of time and space needs some work. Two of the prints were from SAS Fabrics in Hawthorne, several were scraps from friends, several were from thrifted clothes (including the astronaut print, which was a men's shirt I got for $2), the rockets were from a neighbor via #buynothing and a cool embroidered patch was from a fellow attendee. #gally1 #quilt #quilting #doctorwho #timeandspace
A square quilt made from 36 squares of printed fabric arranged in a 6x6 square with a purple border and dark blue binding; the fabrics are all in prints referring to Doctor Who, space, or time. The dominent colors are dark blue, turquoise, grey, and pale gold.

Four photos, so slide through. My wonderful and artistic kid carved me a set of #DoctorWho stamps for Christmas this year (picture 1). She is not herself a huge fan, but she studied pictures online and made these fifteen cool stamps--so intricate (picture 2). I used them to make a set of wooden pins, and a set of bookmarks (pictures 3 and 4), which I will bring to #GallifreyOne this year for swapping (there's a big swap culture there). And I will bring the stamps just to show them off, too. ;)

Thank you! I really enjoyed making this one. Turns out FADLA might not happen till March now--folks are recovering from fires, or working on fire recovery events, right now--but yes, it's done on schedule, and I have another quilt lined up to make in February. After my fingertips heal a bit.

My string #quilt for #funaday #funadayLosAngeles #fadla2025 is done! It's about 4 feet square. All scraps from my house--I didn't buy anything for this one. Some of the thread is from my grandmother's stash. A lot of the cute prints are gifted by neighbors via #buynothing #stringquilt #colorful #square #sewing #quilting
A square string quilt, made from strips of colorful print fabrics, arranged in four diamonds, with a black-and-white striped X through the middle; bordered in black, with a pink binding.

Making progress on my string #quilt for #funadayLA2025; most of this is machine sewn but the pinned parts will be handsewn (tonight) to keep the vertical black strips aligned. Then borders, then the hand quilting begins.... #FADLA #quilting #funaday #funaday2025
A square string quilt in progress, with the quadrants of blue/purple, yellow/tan, red/pink, and blue/turquoise strips, separated by narrower panels of black/white strips; all separated by narrow black strips. It is pinned in several places with safety pins.

Fun-A-Day is an international annual event--there are Fun-A-Day shows all over. The idea is to plan a fun project you can do every day in January and share at a show in February. This is my tenth year of FADLA. I've crocheted blankets, made hats, wrote Wikipedia articles, collaged postcards, did chalkart, sewed and dyed clothing, etc. Other people write songs, create dances, make photographs, books, games, dolls, paintings. The variety makes it fun every year.
