@Starcade I prefer this & already get email receipts for vendors/restaurants that use #Square as their credit card processor.

I used to crop all my photos into squares - even before Instagram made it trendy for a while.
So even though I'm trying to teach myself not to go square, some times I just have to.

Fintech company Block lays off 4,000 of its 10,000 staff, citing gains from AI

> Shares in the financial technology company Block soared more than 20% in premarket trading Friday after its CEO announced it was laying off more than 4,000 of its 10,000 plus employees, reconfiguring to capitalize on its use of artificial intelligence.

> “The core thesis is simple. Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company,” Jack Dorsey said in a letter to shareholders in Block, the parent company to online payment platforms such as Square and Cash App. “A significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better,” he said.

> Dorsey’s comments explicitly naming AI as a key driver behind the move were also posted on X, or Twitter, a company he co-founded. The assertion that the job cuts will add to Block’s profitability and efficiency led investors to jump in and buy, analysts said. apnews.com/article/block-dorse #Fintech #Block #financialtechnology #AI #Square #JackDorsey #layoffs #artificialintelligence

It's truly the end of an era.

#Block, a company local to me (they're behind #Square) announced they're laying off 4k employees, nearly half their staff, and they framed it as an upgrade gained from their embrace of #AI . Which is an interesting claim, because nearly all independent evaluations of AI in the work place have found alleged gains resulting from it to be middling at best. So the claim is probably a dodge, throwing a "we're hip with the new thing" gloss over a simple old-fashioned downsizing.

Well. My online storefront platform, Goimagine, officially announced today that it is folding. It will cease on March 23rd.

I really believed in that platform. I thought it was ethically solid.

But they blamed a lack of sellers. At their peak, they had 7200 paid sellers, and apparently needed 12K to make it viable to continue.

What they didn’t address is why they didn’t grow beyond that, and that’s where the real problem was. So it wasn’t lack of users. It was a lack of capacity to implement fixes, features, integrations, and investors. It wasn’t that there weren’t enough people using it. It was that there was not enough management to keep them there and get more.

So.

I think I’m going to have to shift over to Shopify. My hubby works with it daily at two vastly different levels of scale, and knows it very well. So that’s an advantage.

He ensures me that the AI features are opt-in. I’d love to believe him, but I think he may be a bit… biased… hehe…

Any artists/craftsmen have issues with turning off and opting-out of AI with Shopify?

Right now, I’m using Square for my POS tool. I hear Shopify has options for that, too, but they’re pricey. Hm.
