1) New paper out! Alternative reproductive tactics and evolutionary rescue—do low-condition males that acquire matings by other means affect the rate of adaptation? Intuitively you'd think yes: some of these males will have poor condition because of maladaptive alleles or a high mutational load, so if the alternative tactic increase the input of their genes into the next generation that should be A Bad Thing

Has there been a meaningful change in the number of black professors in the UK?

nature.com/articles/d41586-024

Nature thinks so, but I think a 25% increase in a single year sounds huge until you look at the tiny numbers involved

@_wurli oh I understand it doesn't fit the remit of exactly what you were after. But I hope you will at least be able to stop 'abusing' poor facet wrap 🤞

@_wurli No need to abuse facet wrap - have you checked out nested facets in the ggh4x package?

I hope you don't need this, but here are some tips on organizing your -80.

nature.com/articles/d41586-024

However, if you are like me, its a good reminder to clear out the 'It's 6:30, and I swore I'd be home at 6:00, but I just finished making this thing' tray in our -80.

Yes, we do have one, and it is useful because sometimes you have something that needs to go in the -80 right now, but you also need GO HOME RIGHT NOW!! Because it's a concrete location, it doesn't get too crazy.

Who will be going to PopGroup 57 in St. Andrews next week? I was planning on using BlueSky, but without hashtags such as #PGG57 #Evolution #PopGen, I'm not sure how it will work?

I know I just boosted this — hachyderm.io/@zkamvar/11169927 — but I am (a) not surprised and (b) super thankful @keyboardpipette boosted it so I could see it.

I saw a spate of "is now supporting”'s in my GH RSS feed and wondered why. Also, just tapped the 'support' button myself.

If you can spare either tier (or anything) please support Yihui.

I fear this won't be the last one of these.

The EU Data Visualisation Guide was published last month

data.europa.eu/apps/data-visua

I wrote all the content for it, and I built the interactive publication in @sveltejs. It has 7 chapters and contains a ton of examples. You can search it for a topic, or use it as a guided course and browse from page to page. It basically condenses all I learned about data visualization in the past decade

#30DayMapChallenge Day 25! Antarctica. As an avid #rstats fan the {palmerpenguins} dataset is awesome, and Allison Horst's artwork is even better! So thought it was a good excuse to make a map (with art) of where these data come from (gleaned from the original paper FYI).

map of antarctica with zoomed in section surrounded by a hexagon showing the three sites where the data from the {palmerpenguins} package comes from. Illustration of pinguinos by allison horst on right, just below a full map of antarctica with small dot depicting the zoomed in site.
