Crowdsourcing: I'm looking for a reference to support the statement "RCTs are a cultural product". Any sociologists or philosophers of science know a good one? #philsci #healthpolicy THANKS!

Loving this new paper on complexity in medicine, using pediatrics as the worked example.
Too many medical authors (and the MRC) run fast and loose with the terms 'complexity' and 'complex interventions'. They should read this paper.

dear mastodons, I am looking for a list of causal verbs and causal words in Italian for a study on health information in English and Italian. Found several in English, should I just translate them. Any pointer will be appreciated. #NLP #digitalhumanities #causation
How should numeric probabilities be translated into words? Maybe they shouldn't be.
"Words of estimative probability" wreak havoc in high-stakes communication like #intelligenceCommunity assessments and briefings, in part because intelligence and defense institutions map numbers to different words (!) — see Amelia Kahn's forthcoming work at ameliakahn.wordpress.com.

Interesting piece that challenges the metaphors we use (usually unconsciously) to describe biology:
"What I wish to point out is the lack of other metaphors. Precisely because no metaphor is perfect, we should employ multiple metaphors, each explaining certain aspects of the cell. Unfortunately, the centralised and hierarchical metaphor, so pervasive in textbooks, is often the only one for the internal workings of the cell."

@PUH_ther @academicchatter I don't. Claims like "vitamin C boosts immunity" or "red wine gives longevity" I just call unfounded claims or misunderstanding of science, even though there are financial interests behind them and keep conspiracy theories only for 9/11 or vaccines and 5G stuff. BTW, vegetables, including spinach, are really very healthy.

New ChatGPT detection technique just dropped! Search for "regenerate response". I'm not kidding. Lazy writers using ChatGPT are copy/pasting the full text off of the ChatGPT webpage, including the button text "regenerate response". So far 30 papers have been found with sentences/paragraphs randomly ending with "regenerate response".

What Polanyi explicates as a balanced set of academic incentives, is also relevant for our own, personal judgment.
People too good at critiquing society but not themselves will turn into crackpots.
People unsure of themselves but too trusting of a group or leader might become conformists or even authoritarian followers.
Scientific/epistemological virtue requires finding the "golden mean" between these extremes.
@Doug_Bostrom I am not sure of what is defined as a "scientific study". If those are "publications", then there are over 30 million papers only on PubMed...
