Pollinator Sighting 🐝
Hairy-footed flower bee (Anthophora plumipes)

Pollinator Sighting: Hairy-footed flower bee (Anthophora plumipes)

This species is one of the first to emerge in spring and is often confused as small bumblebees. You can tell them apart by their flight pattern and coloration.
Features: Males and females differ from one another. Males are recognizable by the cream-colored hair and markings on their face, along with distinctive feathery hairs on their legs (which is where their name comes from). Females are darker, with orange hairs on their hind legs, which are used to collect pollen.
Nesting: They like to nest in shallow hallows of soft mortar, soft cliff faces or occasionally in the ground of compact clay.
Flower preferences: They like to visit white clover (Trifolium repens), lungworts (Pulmonaria), primroses (Primula), dead-nettles (Lamium), comfrey (Symphytum), and spring trees such as apple or pear.
What can you do?
Plant early flowering plants, such as the ones mentioned above. You can create nesting sites by providing boxes and walls made of clay, as well as dry stone walls.
