There's a lot we can do at the local government level. We already have policies against bricking over verges or using plastic turf, and our sustainable building guidelines encourage people to leave more space for greenery. Our urban forest strategy is also a big part of our approach to lowering the temperature.
I'd like to see us develop a heat safe city plan, with a more holistic and comprehensive approach to helping people stay safe during heatwaves.

This article looks at the gutting of science and environmental funding in Canada as we spiral headlong into climate catastrophe. It's always good to maintain an awareness of how our own country continues to fall short in this area despite headlines being dominated by even more horrific environmental policies from south of the border.
