It stands for "Urchin Tracking Module" and comes from a web stats analysis product made by "Urchin Software Corp.", which Google bought around 20 years ago and then turned into Google Analytics.

Today I learned: the Bally Professional Arcade was one of the second-generation video game consoles, contemporary with the Atari 2600 and the Intellivision, but unlike those consoles you could buy Bally BASIC and write your own programs. Of course, it didn't come with a keyboard, just a calculator style keypad on the front of the unit, so the input method was... tedious.

I noticed that a *lot* of the crawlers/bots we see on www.bbc.co.uk & www.bbc.com are spoofed e.g. a "Meta" crawler coming from 10s of different small ISPs across the world (the real one comes from a Meta ASN).
I deployed a change this morning which adds source ASN validation (alongside user-agent string analysis) to our "known crawlers/bots" classifier & well, the results speak for themselves. Attached graphs show RPS from "known crawlers/bots" to www.bbc.co.uk & www.bbc.com.

I have been using Mastodon for a couple of years now, and while the privacy focus is part of the shift, the bigger shift is understanding that Twitter and Mastodon are not competitors. PixelFed and Instagram are not competitors.

The old platforms are social media. They are entertainment platforms that nominally connect you to friends. But their actual customers are advertisers and entertainers (influencers?)

The new federated platforms are social networking. They're community-owned and operated for the sole purpose of serving a community. They don't have customers, they have members. They are collaborative efforts run by individuals and not-for-profits.
