I'm so confused how that bird site is still running. How hasn't it crashed or something by now?
I would love for some of the amazing people laid off from the dumpster fire site to work on mastodon stuff.
Reposting this on the new instance --
An #introduction:
I'm Alex Hanna, the Director of Research for the Distributed #AI Research Institute. I'm a #sociology PhD who has been studying #tech and society for over 10 years. I'm involved in #labor and #trans organizing, and am currently Chair of Sociologists for Trans Justice. I sometimes teach at Cal #Berkeley. The rest of my free time goes to #RollerDerby -- I skate, announce, and sometimes referee with Bay Area Derby in #Oakland.
For those working at birdsite:
RT @linguangst: hey tech-folk: if your company is hiring and isn't owned by the human equivalent of a rotten pistachio, drop a link for the tweeple ⤵️

I read this elsewhere: If trusted news outlets would start offering #Mastodon instances to their staff, that would bring some sort of verification and visibility. Think social.nytimes.com, social.heise.de etc. I'd love to read more from trusted journalists on the #fediverse and this could greatly help. (Again, not my idea but couldn't find the original author.) Boosts for visibility would be great. Reminder: Favorites don't help as on this other platform.
I hope the dude gets sued to the brim
an #introduction: I'm Dylan, I work at DAIR as a research engineer.
Recently I've been thinking about popular narratives about AI, and how to (re)frame people's ways of thinking about ethics in AI/ML. I also think a lot about datasets, particularly wrt classificatory systems and data labor. I'm a swe by training, so I also spend a good amount of my time data engineering (and slowly learning frontend).
Outside of that, I'm also super into social dance, particularly #westcoastswing dancing 🕺
Dylan (@dylan) has set up a DAIR instance, http://dair-community.social.
We're starting out invite-only to keep growth manageable, but if you want to join, please fill out this google form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfVhQh4adSiFNl0G3t0kFQbPEU8_Gect4qaFBYF4CTnH5iuCw/viewform
I admittedly still don't know how this works and have in my TODO to spend time reading.
"in a GAN application on the facial composition of criminal profiles biases in gender may result in wrongful profiling."
From a paper on the topic of fairness. Because that's the main problem with a "GAN application on the facial composition of criminal profiles?"

Hello #fediverse! We’re excited to finally join the club and will be posting all things #DigitalRights here.
EDRi is a network of 47+ NGOs, experts & academics working to defend and advance digital rights across the continent. For almost 2 decades, we have served as the backbone of the digital rights movement in Europe.
We will try to reply to any comments or questions here but please bear with us, our comms colleagues have a lot of different channels to manage :)
I believe Dylan Baker at DAIR has created a DAIR mastodon instance :) nothing fancy but something to get us started. I'll write the details here once I check things out.
@Jackiemauro I'm assuming this is one way of doing that? https://opencollective.com/mastodon/donate
@Jackiemauro @willknight do you know if there Is a way to make one time donations or make donations besides the memberships? I signed up as a member but also want to make a one time donation to help with the influx.
I do software development, devops, accounting, customer support, project management, product design, public relations, and moderation for 36K per year...
@al2 we shall see 😅 Dylan said he’ll work on it which has me feeling better about it.
