@mcc And of course this reasoning shouldn't be used to make trans people the only people at risk of having "conversion therapy" thrown at them. As per bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61018404

2025-05-12

@mcc Basically I don't think this should detract from the core aim of the petition, and I still believe it is a very good idea to sign it to stop abuse, torture and repression, but am offering a nuance that may be useful for lawmakers after the petition succeeds.

2025-05-12

@mcc I was reading the petition demands that are rightly detailed.

I started wondering whether "Provide a clear, precise and comprehensive definition of conversion practices, which shall cover all practices that seek to change [...] a person's [...] gender identity [...]" could be misinterpreted (wilfully, perhaps) by some as including voluntarily-chosen HRT for trans people that has a positive rather than negative psychological effect, unlike what this is combatting.

EU citizens, if you want in while you can, there's a EU citizen's petition for the EU to ban "conversion therapy" (this is as ominous as it sounds) of LGBTQs, with 7 days left to sign.

It will not make the threshold, but might be able to rack up a few more country thresholds— I'm happy to note Spain just hit it. Belgium and The Netherlands are the next best bets as they're over 65%; If you know queer-friendly folks in those countries, maybe a good time to forward this:

If you can, offer light, dark, low contrast and high contrast mode options. It’s great for everyone’s eyes to have alternatives. Avoid too hight contrasts like pure white on black. #accessibility #a11y

@ajaxStardust @heydon I suppose there are a bunch of things that CSS now does better for a number of reasons, that were previously done via JS (like animations), and those can (and should) be implemented in CSS now for a number of reasons.

(But it doesn’t change the fact that CSS is a mess. 😏)

The CSS Working Group is currently discussing something in CSS that's in this world.

Often Browser 2 doesn't want to update, because they are already correctly following the web standard. So it's Browser 1 that needs to change, but websites are already depending on the behavior they have, and changing it could break websites.

THIS is why is so very important for all browsers to implement according to a mature standard, and not rush things out the door. Or ship when there's spec disagreement.

I recently saw someone use #LoFi to refer to local first software, and I *love* that appropriation of the term. LoFi is chill. LoFi is about being left alone whether to focus and get things done or just vibe.

Let's make more #LoFiSoftware

Please spread the word on this.

Edit: From replies, it looks like this may not be active in Canada, but is in the US, Mexico, UK and several EU countries.

☝️ This is really great. Daniel Supernault, the Pixelfed developer, has created a general Fediverse on-boarding tool (fedidb.com/welcome), and is looking for feedback. This thread (begins here: mastodon.social/@dansup/114482) has lots of constructive suggestions already.

Let's pull our Fedi hive mind together to help Daniel refined this much needed capability!

Great job Daniel!
