Phone calls

Like many people, I get lots of calls from numbers I don't recognize - today was no exception. The surprise came when I got a VM, which is much rarer these days. The message speaks for itself....

(Since I'm trying to post more, I was going thru my drafts to see what I had started and see if I could post anything. This one is.... almost 7 years old, which makes it that much weirder....)

Retropia “Repurposed” Lens

As someone who loves to take photos, there's a lot you can do in things like software when you take a photo. But what about when you take the photo? There's all kinds of lenses available, but sometimes you want something a little different.

Like... maybe the lens out a disposable camera.

Like.... something like that but adapted so that you can use it with your m

RIP, Bill Atkinson

In a lot of ways - the most important ones - HyperCard, and thus Bill Atkinson, had a profound impact on my life and my career. He passed away on Thursday (June 5, 2025) and I'm just learning about it, which makes me sad - except that I was pretty offline this weekend starting Thursday afternoon, so....

Anyway, he joined Apple as employee #51, and did a lot of thi

Douglas Adams, via the HHGTTG, on flying

There is an art to flying, or rather, a knack to flying.

The knack lies in learning to thro youself at the ground and miss.

Are you lost?

Get a compass!

Weird first post in a while, but I find myself researching where to find a map compass' today, so I figured I would post a link since it's possible someone else may need one. Amazon has "Coughlan's Map Compass", your basic "points north like it should" piece of technology. If you know how you use it, you can "put the red in the shed" and find your way. If you don't,

Axios

Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnaeus_D:

The emperor Nero, highly fearful of Corbulo's reputation, ordered him to commit suicide, which the general carried out faithfully, exclaiming "Axios" (meaning "I am worthy") and fell on his own sword.

Sometimes I wonder how I'm doing at my job. Other times, I'm helping my wife get the speakers to work on a zoom call while she's in her office and I'm driving to work, telling her what to do from memory.
So I guess I'm doing ok? #techlife #itlife

September 11

"All the photos from 9/11 are powerful, some much more than others. I have acollection of photos, links, thoughts, etc from 9/11 when I was trying to make sense of it all – and among them is this and one other “falling” photo. I forget they are  on my website until I go looking for something and find the folder, simply named “wtc”, silently waiting for me to click on it, which I occasi

Creating Mail.app filters via AppleScript

"My company is mostly macOS, and we're using Google for our email. We just enabled external mail notifications, which is fine on the web or in the iOS app, but it's not showing up in non-Google access. I created a rule that will highlight emails that aren't internal, but I'm trying to figure out if I can use A

Lyman Auditorium

About 2 weeks before my last official day of work, I dragged Emma and Ethan with me to campus to pick something up and we did an impromptu tour of the campus. Really like how this photo came out.

“This issue is complicated by it’s complexity”

I can't honestly believe I wrote that. Worse..... I saved that as a comment to a ticket.

Coffee

For the first time in a very long time, I'm struggling to finish my first cup of coffee. I prefer my coffee sweetened, and we recently switched from an individual packet setup to a resealable 1/2 lb. bag - meaning that how sweet things are is based on how much attention I'm paying to things when I make my cup.

Clearly, today, when I continued to re-introduce the option for a second c
