You know what never gets old? Watching knowledge spread one @wikidata sitelink addition at a time.
Today there are already Wikipedia articles about Pope Leo XIV in 123 languages and if you watch the Wikidata Item's edit history you'll see when the next one gets written: wikidata.org/wiki/Q6109517

@gollyhatch criticism is good and helps the project grow. I'll note to mention it to people when I help them sign up.

@gollyhatch the availability of seeing user's edits and interacting is great for building a local community. For example messaging fellow local users about meetups or asking about whether they surveyed another nearby feature. There's even welcome.osm.be/ to help with finding new users.

I agree though that if you are concerned about personal privacy you should use an alias or rotate accounts, you can still interact without being identifiable. Or just edit on your own, that's ok too.

🎉 New paper out: CoolWalks for active mobility in urban street networks
nature.com/articles/s41598-025

We study the potential for shaded walking, using building footprints and street networks.

Higher sun avoidance alpha implies choice of routes that are not physically shortest but that minimize experienced length. (A) Example of three different links connecting two nodes in the street network, from shortest and least shaded (1, blue) to longest and most shaded (3, green). (B) The choice of which link to take depends on the pedestrian’s sun avoidance alpha. Increasing sun avoidance increases the experienced length because walking in the sun becomes less tolerable. At the threshold between different regimes, for example 1 (blue) to 2 (orange), the experienced length of the shaded link 2 becomes shorter than the experienced length of sunny link 1, implying a preference for link 2 despite longer physical length (dashed orange line). (C,D) Generalization from links to shortest paths with an example of five routes.

Ever needed to simplify street networks? I did. And it is a pain. So we joined forces with @anavybor and @JamesGaboardi and wrote an algorithm that does that for us. And can do for you, as it is available as a Python package called `neatnet`.

Here's a short blog about it - martinfleischmann.net/simplifi

And here's, not so short preprint - arxiv.org/abs/2504.16198

But you probably want the package. That is here - uscuni.org/neatnet.

Happy coding!

Just another park made pretty in OSM - it deserves more than just being a lonely green polygon! #micromapping

@ian I imagine these are the same addresses that were imported into OpenStreetMap from the E911 dataset (or another one, not sure) a couple years ago. (wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ne)

I wonder what we're missing with these updates...

Every three months I get an email from Craig in the New York State GIS department with a new set of addresses for OpenAddresses. An hour of automated processing later and we've got updated addresses available for everyone to use!

(And a pretty cool picture of the data, too)

New on the blog: A Usefully Useless Projection. I have released a free wall #map, in my new asymmetric monstrosity projection. Prints are also available if someone wants to shock me by buying one.

(The post also explains how/why I made this)

somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.c

A world map, in a strange-looking, highly interrupted projection. The water is a grey blue and varies in lightness by depth. The land is mainly tan/brown, with some variations in lightness. The projection has various bulbous and/or spiky protrustions. The title at the bottom "The Physical World" can be read. The map is in a simulated black frame, on a subtly textured background.A detailed view of part of the map, from a low angle. Australia and New Zealand are the focus. The projection changes suddenly along the parallel that passes through North Island. Sharp angles can be seen in the graticule.A detailed view of part of the map, from a low angle. The focus is on the northern two-thirds of Africa. Along the Prime Meridian, there is a major interruption cutting Europe in half, also going through parts of north Africa.

@mvexel my old MacBook is on its last legs. I've since started using a desktop for most personal things.

I have considered getting a Linux laptop when I feel the need to go mobile again. It looks like they've come a long way based on these reviews - wired.com/story/best-linux-lap
