I had an energizing collaboration session with my State Representative Kim Schofield (District 63) this morning in #GrantPark, chatting about student internship programs (in/around Atlanta and for my students at #kennesawstateuniversity and #civicengagement in my neighborhood (#ThomasvilleHeights). All this came about from one cold email that I sent her seeking help securing a better polling location for people in my neighborhood. Thanks for you work, Rep. Kim :) #atlanta

@wearenew_public I don't know about bleak; the "oblivion" part is not in an apocalyptic sense. It's used in a sense to describe the lives that we lead offline, away from screens. What we find there, and how it enriches us. I get that our first response to "oblivion" is bad, though :)

@wearenew_public I've been enjoying your steam the last couple of weeks. Here's a book that you might like to check out/feature. I'm contemplating teaching it in my classes this summer. hup.harvard.edu/books/97806742

A black-and-white political sticker on a metal pole in an urban setting, featuring bold white text on a black background. The message criticizes oligarchs for controlling the economy and democracy, alleging that they seek to divide people to distract from wealth and power concentration. It ends with a unifying statement: "We have more in common with each other than we do with them." The sticker appears slightly peeling at the bottom, with a handwritten tag “obfusc-18” in the corner. A blurred city street with a bus and buildings is visible in the background.

This is an excerpt from what I wrote in 2015 when OpenAI was announced and all y'all journalists were lauding them as the benevolent souls who were going to save us from AI.

"A white tech tycoon born and raised in South Africa during apartheid, along with an all white all male set of investors and researchers is trying to stop AI from “taking over the world” and the only potential problem we see is that “all the researchers are working on deep learning?”

I'm getting a lot from this right now: "A Solarpunk Manifesto: Turning Imaginary into Reality", written in 2023 by William Joseph Gillam, that explains the ideological roots and priority systems of the #solarpunk movement. More specifically, it organizes the solarpunk "imaginary" into three "guilding principles": anarchism, ecology, and justice. mdpi.com/2409-9287/8/4/73?

"The Future of Social Media" by Youtuber SolarpunkAlana, which lays out an efficient, clear, powerful argument 1) against corporate social media and 2) in support of finding alternatives that prioritize autonomy, federation, and anti-corporate activism: youtube.com/watch?v=gjK08O1yGU .. impressive and empowering work.

@sam grr .. frustrations like these sometimes birth the best collective action/org ideas .. let us know what you come up with. and stay warm :)

2025-01-08

@sam am i right in guessing this is somewhere in cobb? would be good to get a bike-friendly non-profit (like propel, if it were in atl) involved in putting some pressure on them .. or at least putting out a psa on this kind of thing .. i can imagine a business owner not really thinking about something like this until it happens.
