Now, the standard 512 MB 133x ones are getting a bit hard to find, and the industrial grade ones are definitely not cheap, but I have never had any issues with either of them.

It seems that the #crowdfunding #publisher #Unbound has folded, leaving everyone else out of pocket – authors and pledgers alike.

The same two people who so mismanaged Unbound then set up a new publishing company, #Boundless, and "acquired" Unbound's IP, so they can continue to publish books without any obligation to pay their old company's debts. Authors and purchasers are thus left out of pocket.

I wonder what their next (perfectly legal, TYVM) venture will be called.

I need to be very clear, that the push towards "vibe coding" - that is, deliberately deskilling people - is because AI code assistants are an (increasingly expensive) subscription service.

If you know how to code, you can just write Python, C, Java, R, PHP, whatever for free and make things. You may not own the tools of production, but at least you're not renting them.

If you have been deskilled so you only know how to vibe code, you will be paying for that privilege forever.

This also goes, by the way, for researchers who are starting to be convinced they don't need to learn how to be scientists anymore, because "the AI" can just do the science for them. Nope.

How far can a toot travel in the fediverse?

I chatted recently with someone who complained that the fediverse lacked "reach".

So I'm curious: if you are up for it, could you please reply to this toot (which started life on single user instance on a tiny computer in a garage in the United Kingdom) saying which country you are in?

@LaurentFr J'ai de très bons souvenirs de ma matricielle 9 aiguilles mais je ne pourrais plus dire si c'etait une Epson ou une Brother.

On peut le voir sur ta vidéo, ces imprimantes étaient capables de faire trois passes avec un décalage très fin, ce qui permettait une impression à 216 dpi. Par contre, je m'étais amusé à mesurer: 8 minutes par page !

J'ai toujours traité le gros axe de glisse au graphite fin. Ni huile, ni graisse.

All orders have been delivered, time to replace the the RTC chip on the #PentiumPro motherboard.

Removing the chip went well with the desoldering gun and a bit of help with hot air for the GND pin.

I soldered a socket and used a nwX287 by Necroware. It feels slightly wrong to use a Varta battery in there but I guess that one will be fine.
