After reading Vander Viana's book Teaching English with Corpora, I made a list of online corpus tools that either (a) I didn’t know about, or (b) I wasn’t really familiar with before reading the book. I made this thread to spread the word about some of them to other language teachers. #corpuslinguistics @corpuslinguistics

Dear #CorpusLinguistics bubble,

I need your help for a visually impaired student of mine: Are there any corpus tools that work well with text-to-speech software? Thank you! 🙏

@friedrichmoser not sure I'm the best person for this but I might know someone with more relevant expertise I can pass on to 😁 You can either Direct Message me on here or I have a couple of contact options on my About page

@carexl8 depending what you're wanting to do with the annotated data afterwards there might be some corpus linguistic software which would give you usable data... What sort of annotation are you looking for?

2022-11-20

@friedrichmoser @academicchatter @phdstudents @linguistics @corpuslinguistics hi! Primarily I'm using corpus software Lancsbox to look at keywords (using log likelihood as well log ratio) and their collocates

A small suggestion for new #TwitterMigration folks!

When you arrive here it's extremely helpful to add a profile picture, a bio, and maybe some links to your other sites (if you can)

It's even more helpful if you add this information before you start sending follow requests!

It's hard to work out who you all are otherwise, and it's not uncommon for folks on here to check before allowing follow requests to go through

Also, welcome! :ablobcathappypaws:

Repeat #introduction: Hoping to connect with other @academicchatter @phdstudents and researchers in @linguistics and @corpuslinguistics, and people in the broader field of #HealthCommunication

I'm a #PhD student, currently looking at linguistic markers of suicidal ideation in social media content. Using a #CorpusLinguistics approach to #DiscourseAnalysis, I'm interested in the digital tools and methods used to provide support for people with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts online 😊

Good whatever time it is at your location, fellow llinguists! When you run across any new #linguistics colleagues arriving in the Fediverse, make sure to point them to resources for connecting with the rest of us – groups like @linguistics and @corpuslinguistics and the etherpad list of linguists where they can both find others and add their own handle to be found! etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/masto

@linguistics

My gender expression is fluid. Several years ago I felt frustrated by changes to the terminology around transgender feelings, beliefs and actions. I decided to study the lexical semantics of various terms in this frame, in the hopes of clarifying our thinking and advocating for better treatment!

A gentle reminder to folks who are new to Mastodon. In solidarity with those in the disabled community who rely on screen readers, we ask that you:

* Add alt text/image descriptions when you post media
* Capitalize the first letter of every word in a hashtag #LikeThis
* Avoid emojis in your display name

UPDATE: So many great questions! Please check the replies to see if your question has been asked and answered ❤️

As more academics reach Fedi, please PLEASE consider not doing research on users here without explicit opt-in consent

This isn't a zoo

It's not just condescending for you to treat us that way, it's also against a lot of instances' terms of use

See "Use of Scholar Social for research" at the following link for an example:

@socrates Boosting this, and adding: remember this is NOT Twitter. Every instance/server has its own admin; their server, their rules. This is a FEDERATED microblogging platform, that is not a monolithic corporation.

Corpus linguists of Mastodon! @larissagoulart and I have just spontaneously created a group for all things corpus: @corpuslinguistics — join the group by following it. If you then mention it in a post, your post will automatically be boosted to all group members!

If "Home" is completely empty here on Mastodon, start using hashtags. Use 'em in your posts, click 'em in your timelines, follow 'em. That's how people connect (and interconnect between Mastodon instances). There is no global search, intentionally. Don't view the value of this experience through the lens of a previous one. This is not a spoon-fed design. This is not a popularity contest. This is not optimized for time-on-site or in-app.

To all of you joining us from the bird site...

Please take your time. Breathe for a moment. This is not the place you just left. Acclimatize yourself. Ask questions. Heck, ask me questions. Please, take a moment to watch, read, and process the new environment.

You've made it this far. We are here to help.

Here's a comment for incoming Twitter users: I've found that some are really put off by the way Mastodon requires push and pull to get to information. Rather than Elmo telling you what to read (and steering you to most incendiary content), you have to go look for it and choose to consume it. Most notably, I've come to think of "Content Warnings" as instead subject lines, just like you'd use in an email, so readers can scan whether they want to read further.
