Experts, Knowledge Communities, and #PublicHealth (A thread).

Public #healthcommunication usually happens through an exper model. The big idea is that experts have knowledge that other people lack. It's the expert's responsibility to get the knowledge out to people. It is hierarchical with gatekeeping mechanisms meant to ensure trustworthiness and accuracy. At the same time, it can be inflexible, slow to respond to changing situations, and limited by the time/energy/POV of a single person (1/4)

This is an illustration of the "Expert Model" of communication, which relies on a central, formally acknowledged knowledge generator in a position of authority. Here, this is illustrated via a person in a white coat standing in a spotlight, in front of a crowd of anonymous figures

Published my first #animation for my BCPH #publichealth Thought Leader fellowship: youtu.be/_oNmDHmsiRA

In it, I use the example of Rebecca Black to understand the risks of #healthcommunication in the pandemic era, and point to action items individuals, organizations, and policymakers can take to tackle the issue of harassment of health officials.

Made this graphic to pull out some action items around making health communication safer. I've seen toolkits around online safety focused on individual-level actions. While there are a lot of good resources out there, I also think it's important to call on universities and government agencies to proactively plan for cases of online harassment. I also see a big gap in data to help us understand what coordinate harassment on health officials looks like.
#healthcommunication #publichealth #scicomm

Over half of surveyed local health departments exprienced harassment in the first 11 months of the pandemic. Here's what we can do about it.

Individuals can learn from fields with a track record of protections against online abuse, e.g. journalism. Organizations can create online harassment response plans. They can also onvest in services to clear employee info from data brokers. A policy goal is the creation of a national reporting system to better understand coordinated online harassment of health officials.
