White queer lady in San Francisco. Knitter, transit geek, and sometime editor and cyclist. Learning Croatian, Irish, and Spanish. I write smut, which I don't post here, but I do talk about in a vague way sometimes.

@martinschlegel There are a ton of options! It depends on what language you're learning, but Mango is great and often available for free through public libraries.

Glossika is great for reading and listening, though less so for teaching grammar and is much more repetitive, so I wouldn't recommend it for kids but it's useful for adults. (It's a little expensive, but worth it in my opinion!)

Anki is open source and free on desktop and web and can be used for more than language learning (it's basically a fancy flashcard program), but I've found it's a really effective tool for practicing vocabulary. You can download decks other people have created to practice with or create your own, and you can even include images, video, and audio. The app is $25 which is pricey, but it's a one-time purchase and helps fund development of all versions of Anki. imo it could definitely be kid-friendly, but depends on the kid!

Happy #DraculaDaily season to those who celebrate 🦇

Vitamin A won't cure measles. A 'healthy diet' won't stop you from getting measles. "Wellness" doesn't make you immune to disease and disability.

The people who push these ideas are eugenicists. They are conditioning you to believe disability and chronic illness is our fault.

We must call mask bans what they are:

Pro infection ugly laws.

They promote the spread of disease. They encourage cosplaying 2019 “normal” even though the threat of Covid hasn’t passed & we have measles spreading too.

If you can wear a mask, mask up now. We need visible solidarity to fight bans

@dressupgeekout Oh I had no idea! That’s good to know. Did you have to make an appointment or just walk in?

Does anybody in SF or Daly City have a notary they recommend?

Happy May Day! This is hand-pulled lino block print of the Jack-in-the-Green (or Jack o’ the Green) an English folk tradition for May Day. Wearing a conical or pyramidal wicker or wooden frame covered in foliage so as to conceal the wearer, the Jack-in-the-Green leads a May Day procession, dancing often with musicians and other figures. 🧵1/2

My linocut print of a Jack-in-the-Green on 8” x 10” cream coloured washi paper, printed in green ink. A man with visible boots wears a conical frame over his body, covered in foliage, with a green face, flower crown and ribbons in pink, red, yellow, blue and turquoise.

On the International Workers’ Day, we remember that every right we have, the 8-hour day, weekends, safety laws, was wrested from the bosses by worker solidarity. They want us divided, scared, and grinding ourselves to dust for their profits.

But history’s arc bends toward justice when labor rises together. The machines run on our sweat, the cities stand on our backs, and the future belongs to those who dare to seize it. Solidarity forever; the struggle continues! ✊

I should have done this a long time ago, but I only had wool yarn on hand. This bamboo sock yarn is perfect for the purpose. And it doesn't matter if my dyed hair stains them pink!

I have half a mind to decorate the top of the headphones with the same yarn, but I don't know what motif... My embroidery skills are limited. Anyone have ideas? #visiblemending #repaircafe

A pair of grey noise cancelling headphones with very worn out foam pads. The foam is peeping out of the split and peeling faux leather. One side has been repaired by wrapping it in pink and red yarn. The other side is a third of the way done, a trail of yarn still attached to a needle. The ball of yarn is pictured next to the headphones.

Lucky number 13 in the Close Encounters Collection is my painting, "Little Mlem." I wanted to experiment with unusual colors, and I really like how the green turned out!

Painting of a black cat painted with green and sticking out his tongue with wide eyes. The artist's signature and @joyousjoyfuljoyness watermark are at the bottom left.

I'm sick and tired of being unable to gig, or even go to gigs, due to the lack of COVID cautious events with sensible mitigations (masks, LFTs, ventilation etc)

I'm not the only one, and I know such events are starting to happen in the UK and elsewhere.

Thinking v srsly about putting sth together locally, but first I need to find out more.

So if you know of any COVID cautious music events anywhere in the world, please let me know.

(Pls boost?)

Looking to replace Duolingo?

Your library might provide you free access to Language Learning Apps.

No, not CDs or cassette tapes (when was the last time you were at the library? ).

Actual apps. That you download onto your phone.

My library provides me access to TWO language learning apps that compete directly with Duolingo. Mango Language App and Transparent Language App.

What apps does your library provide?

#duolingo #library #solarPunk

genuinely cackling over this dude. "In the 1880's and 1890's, Bierce almost singlehandedly battled the corrupt railroad monopolists who ruled their ill-gotten empire from atop Nob Hill. He called railroad magnate Leland Stanford 'Stealand Landford,' insisted that the railroad barons were 'public enemies and indictable criminals,' and warned the public that the trains were so often behind schedule that passengers would be 'exposed to the perils of senility' before reaching their destinations."

incredible

utilizing my personal fav adhd tactic for writing longer stuff: "oh, I'll just write a few bullet points." It's the writing equivalent of "I don't have the energy to clean the whole kitchen, but I can get the dishwasher loaded." Sometimes, all that happens is I get a few bullet points down and I make a little bit of progress, which is good! Other times, like tonight, I end up outlining huge chunks of stuff and getting a bunch of thoughts out that are going to make it WAY easier to actually Write The Thing because 55% of the work is already done

@scott see: Sunset Dunes 😅

would like to contrast this with the SF Examiner archive, which you also have to pay for, but it's "only" $7.95 a month to be able to access everything with no article limits.

anyway guess I'm gonna be spending $20 to dig into the Chronicle archives and just spend EVERY POSSIBLE HOUR of the day digging through it. hella ridiculous

me: why haven't I dug into the SF Chronicle archives for this research paper yet? I need to do that

SF Chronicle Archives:

A screen showing options for various subscription plans to access the SF Chronicle archives. They range from paying for a single article for $3.95 to a month-long/100 article pass for $29.95.

one of the funniest parts of digging into info about 1890s cycling is learning about the Good Roads Movement and how cyclists across the nation demanded that roads be paved and did a bunch of activism around that

it's funny to me because 1) this literally paved the way for car culture, and I kind of wonder if cars would've gotten traction in the same way without this and 2) it's proof that cyclists have been activists forever. put a bunch of us in a room together and suddenly we're like "let's solve some damn problems!!!!"
