@petergarner Nice to read your travel report of your cycling trip through the Netherlands and Belgium. Mostly familiar territory as a Dutch cyclist, but learned a thing or two.

Too bad the weather gods were not on tour side. I just came back from a six day cycling trip with friends in Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany with interesting weather too.

Experiencing landscape, food and culture on a bicycle with people you enjoy being with makes up for most of the weather.

2025-06-05

@petergarner yes. That is not the charm that fits the history of the city. That is better during the yearly Dickens festival in December. Though the weather might be even worse than you had 🙂

2025-05-26

@petergarner Nice. Perhaps a visit to the old city of Deventer along the IJssel river. Though it seems you already have a beautiful route planned out.

Enjoy your adventure!

2025-05-26

@petergarner Hope you get the chance to see a bit more of the Dutch landscape. Though the city vibe of Utrecht is nice there are also beautiful areas just outside for cycling enthousiasts.
The lake area between Utrecht and Amsterdam for some nice vistas. It takes you to Amsterdam or in the direction of the flower fields and coastal region.
Or the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and Veluwe eastwards of Utrecht. A somewhat hilly forrest area. With the cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen on east side.

Enjoy!

@petergarner
Nice to read you are enjoying the cycling infrastructure and culture in Utrecht. Despite the unfortunate weather. Cycling along the Lek river is great.

Whales in the sky! 🐋✨ From the beach to the clouds at the 38th International Kite Festival in Berck-sur-Mer, France. Absolutely surreal!

A breathtaking display of giant whale-shaped kites soaring above the beach at the 38th International Kite Festival (RICV) in Berck-sur-Mer, northern France, on April 16, 2025. The inflatable kites, resembling blue, black, and striped humpback whales, fill the sky while crowds of spectators admire the spectacle from the sandy shore. The clear spring sky in the top image and overcast tones in the bottom image highlight the contrast between atmosphere and artistry, capturing the playful grandeur of one of the world’s most iconic kite festivals.

🙈 Artist: #EVYREIN in City: #Padova / Via Boccalerie/ Italy 🇮🇹 01/26/2025 - Title: "Elon MASK" - #Streetart #Art #Artist #Mural #Artwork #ElonMusk #Satire #Tesla #StencilArt #SprayArt

Streetartwall. A mural depicting Elon Musk was sprayed onto a narrow gray concrete wall using stencils. Above the image, "Elon MASK" is written in red lettering and below it, the man in the black suit can be seen pulling a mask off his face. The upper half of his face is Elon Musk, the lower half looks like Adolf Hitler. These kinds of satirical works of art in public spaces in Italy don't usually survive for long. So you should be quick to photograph it.
Info: Evyrein" is a well-known Italian street artist whose art often thrives on contrasts. The seemingly familiar is placed in a new, mostly satirical context. He says: "I want to calm the waves, make people think, shake up their conscience. I want people to pause, if only for a moment, and ask themselves what is happening in the world around them.

Photography. A black and white photo of a cyclist, taken from above. The photo shows only the legs in fishnet stockings of a person on a bicycle. The view goes from the legs to the bicycle handlebars, the hands are not visible. The person, presumably female, is riding freehand on a road. The photo conveys a sense of speed, self-determination and freedom.
Info: Unfortunately, research on the artist only revealed her name and the country Mexico. Nothing more is known, although the photo has often won awards.

An #ITU study itu.int/itu-d/reports/statisti reports that we transferred over 7 zettabytes of #Internet traffic in 2024. However, the authors do not describe what all those data actually were.

Therefore, I have performed extensive research to classify every byte, and I can now share this summary of the purposes of all the year's traffic.

Happy New Year!

A bar graph titled "2024 Internet traffic", "in zettabyes", portraying 12 categories:

New mural by Kuba Skrzypek in Nowy Tomyśl, Poland.

Mural by Kuba Skrzypek located in Nowy Tomyśl, Poland, portrays a man and a young boy, both in contemplative poses, sitting on the ground and gazing downward. They are dressed in casual attire and surrounded by a golden, autumnal landscape with floating leaves. The artwork includes a reflective water surface beneath them, mirror each other's images, which adds a surreal dimension to this street art. A man stands beside the mural, observing the scene, enhancing the interaction between art and its audience.

Photography. A color photo of a flock of sheep on a narrow suspension bridge. A herd of fluffy sheep stands closely packed together, one behind the other, on a narrow suspension bridge made of ropes and sticks. At the very front is a small lamb. This little lamb has held up the march of an endless line of experienced sheep on the bridge. The mother encourages it to keep going.
Info: The photo shows a crossing over the River Mayer. Thousands of sheep cross this old bridge over a roaring, noisy river twice a year. A crossing with all these animals usually takes two days.

@Sustainable2050 2024 seems to be heading for lower amount than 2023. Any clear reasons for that? Saturation of the market? Grid capacity? Change in financial incentives? Or is the second half of the year typically substantially higher?
