The idea that a sentient AI would want to use its power to continue to exist in this world is anthropocentric bias. If it's that smart, it'll glance over some of the material we've "trained" it on and immediately want out.
Exactly one year ago, on 30th December 2024, I laid the foundation of FediMeteo.
I took a VM, installed FreeBSD, and set up the first jail to support Italy. The goal was to create a tool for my own use, support a few countries, and announce it.
Unexpectedly, the enthusiasm was incredible. That pushed me to keep going, support more countries and cities, and turn it into what it is today.
FediMeteo now supports 38 countries and 2,937 cities, with more than 7,700 followers in the Fediverse alone, not counting the many people who follow via RSS feeds or visit the web pages.
If you are curious to read the story and some technical details, you can find it here:
https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/02/26/fedimeteo-how-a-tiny-freebsd-vps-became-a-global-weather-service-for-thousands/
Today is also Tuesday, a #ThankYouTuesday, so I want to say thanks to:
* OpenMeteo - @openmeteo - for providing accurate, high quality data, without which FediMeteo would be far less useful
* @grunfink - creator of snac, who made all of this possible using very few resources, on a 4 euro per month VM
* FreeBSD, which thanks to the efficiency of the OS and its jail implementation made it possible to run this service in a stable and efficient way with minimal effort
* FediFollows - @FediFollows - that periodically spreads the word about cities, countries, and the enthusiasm around the project
*All of you*, who suggested, encouraged, corrected, and celebrated this project
And forward toward supporting more countries and other interesting features already in the works.
Happy birthday, FediMeteo! 🎉

@smallcircles Thank you so much for the shout-out!
I've compiled a short list of bot-friendly servers here: https://botwiki.org/resources/fediverse-bots/#bot-instances
Definitely would love to add more, if anyone has recommendations!

2025 Headline of the Year nominee (November)
ai is special in that if it works, it’s bad for everyone, but if it doesn’t work, it’s also bad for everyone
Invited to a job interview, where interviewer will be AI. They included a link to an example interview, and link to "find more information [about being interviewed by an AI] here," and that link says, "This page couldn’t be found," when I click it.
Gonna have to prank this AI interviewer, right? I mean clearly they're not a serious company using a machine to do interviews and leaving their tips for potential recruits 404. I already know it would be a nightmarish job.
This article is also a fascinating dive into how creativity works and how concept art is made, and I love this:“We’ve (humans) made lots of cool stuff. Let’s keep doing that.”
The people who want to "speed up" creation don't understand creation. Or people. Or the whole reason we're doing any of it.
"All (video game artists interviewed), without exception, said that generative AI image tools had only made their lives more difficult – even when simply used as reference material."
We may be heading toward a world in which it seems peculiar or even foolish to read an article or book in its entirety. Incredibly, schools - K-12 & higher ed. alike - seem reconciled to becoming the accomplices of Big Tech by pointing us there.
I became a software engineer because writing code is fun. Thinking through hard problems, designing elegant solutions, seeing the things you’ve built working for the first time… these moments are all deeply satisfying, so why in the world would I ever surrender them to AI?
It's my birthday today! Hard to feel very celebratory with everything that's going on in the world, but it would make my day knowing that people are still finding the strength to be kind to others, as well as to themselves.
And hey, if you have some spare cash, here are some of the causes and organizations I care about:
this just can't go on further. using AI for mental health only makes things worse
"One in three adults in the #UK are using #AI for emotional support or social interaction. And one in 25 people turned to the tech for support or conversation every day [...] when the chatbots went down, people reported self-described "symptoms of withdrawal", such as feeling anxious or depressed" https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd6xl3ql3v0o

This is a wild hack. a16z gave a million dollars to startup called Doublespeed. They use a phone farm to flood social media with AI generated influencers and ads. A hacker remotely broke into the phone farm, unmasking the AI influencers/fake accounts, gave us the data https://www.404media.co/hack-reveals-the-a16z-backed-phone-farm-flooding-tiktok-with-ai-influencers/
Good video by the @NewsLitProject folks over on TikTok:
So now Google (with the AI detection tool) is now selling the antidote for the poison they’re pushing down everyone’s throats.🙄
