407 years ago, the first slaves arrived in Virginia. They were from Angola.

162 years ago, Lincoln declared that all enslsved people in Confederate territories were free.

160 years ago (to the day!), on #Juneteenth, the last enslaved people in the USA were freed.

61 years ago, racial discrimination and segregation were outlawed by the Civil Rights Act.

60 years ago, black Americans finally secured comprehensive electoral protections through the Voting Rights Act.

But:

- 12 years ago, the Supreme Court ruled that states no longer require federal approval for new voting policies. Since then, more than 100 voter suppression laws have been passed across states with histories of discriminatory practices.

- For every dollar earned by a white person in the USA, a black person earns 87 cents.

- White Americans hold 84% of the country’s wealth, while black people hold just 3%.

- Institutional racism remains a serious problem, with black people facing disparities in education, housing, employment, healthcare, and in the criminal justice system.

- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, three good things that help *everyone*, are under constant attack.

Today is Juneteenth, and it’s a day to celebrate. But I hope all of my white friends can take a moment to consider that however far we think we’ve come with civil rights in this country, it hasn’t been far enough. Every day we see more examples of people in power actively working to undermine fairness and decency while driving increasingly larger wedges between ethnic groups. We have to be better than this. We must refuse to accept this. There is so much work to be done, by all of us.

Reminder: The U.S. attack on Iraq, which sucked the U.S. into a conflict that lasted many years and cost many lives, was predicated on a continual drumbeat of propaganda from the White House that Iraq had "weapons of mass destruction". It turned out that they didn't. Flawed intelligence? Outright lying? It doesn't really matter.

Here we go again.

To reiterate, using tanks to fire on starving people trying to get food from a trap, is extraordinarily evil.

Watching vids of regular community members protecting each other by following ICE/federal agent cars/vans/SUVs and using megaphones, speakers, mics to warn their neighbors and inform people of their rights.

A little Latino guy at a car wash saw some ICE at Pollo Loco across the street and took out his speaker/mic to warn everyone at the Pollo Loco drive-through, and the van pulled away and left.

In April, 1933, the Geheime Staatspolizei, or "Secret State Police", otherwise known as Gestapo, was created by Hermann Goering. This was done by combining multiple local police forces into a single one and federalizing it. This was legal.

In July 1933, Nazis revoked the citizenship of German Jews. This was done by passing the "Law on Denaturalization and Revocation of Citizenship", leaving millions of Germans effectively stateless. This was legal.

In September 1935, The Nuremburg Laws were enacted, further codifying the Nazi plan that only people with "Aryan" blood were citizens of Germany. This was legal.

In May 1940, Auschwitz was built in Poland. It was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps used during the Holocaust to imprison undesirables. This was legal.

On 5 July 1942, Margot Frank received a notice to report to a labor camp in Germany as part of the Nazi's systematic deportation of Jews from Nazi occupied Netherlands. It was well known that this was effectively a death sentence. This was legal.

On 4 August 1944, Anne Frank and her family were discovered in hiding by Gestapo, arrested, and deported to various Nazi concentration camps. Anne and Margot were deported to Auschwitz. This was legal.

On 1 November 1944, Anne Frank and her sister Margot were transferred to Bergen-Belsen, a starvation extermination camp. This was legal.

In either February or March 1945, Margot Frank died in Bergen-Belsen, a victim of typhus and starvation. Her sister Anne died the next day. This was legal.

On 15 April, 1945, British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen, where they walked straight into a nightmare. Approximately 60,000 starving and mortally ill people lay among thousands of unburied bodies, packed together without food, water, or sanitation. This liberation was ILLEGAL, and accomplished solely through the use of military force.

The point is, the actions of the current regime, the kidnapping of civilians, the deportations to Libya and El Salvador, the inhumane treatment of arrestees, the use of federalized law enforcement combined with military force against brown people, these things aren't immoral "because they're illegal". They're immoral because they're immoral, and it's going to take ILLEGAL force to do the right, good, and moral thing.

Israel has stepped up it's slaughter of civilian aid-seekers.
