🚨 This week, due to a lawsuit by The New York Times, OpenAI has been ordered to retain all user chats — even ones that are "deleted" — until further notice.

Enterprise or Edu are clear, but it does affect:

- ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro
- ChatGPT Team
- API users (including any 3rd party product that uses their API)

🛡️ If you're building anything sensitive, proprietary, or regulated, your AI is a compliance and reputational issue.

In the dystopian world we live in, #OpenAI is a company with a double-edged sword. On one hand, with #ChatGPT has contributed to “The Dead Internet Theory" by flooding the web with "infinite useless content" (#AISlop), where content is written by bots for bots, with humans merely consuming the noise. On the other hand, OpenAI offers a solution with #WorldId or #WorldCoin, an iris-scanning identification system that verifies one's humanity. When the web eventually will become a logged-in only system, this technology will help to eliminate bots and allow real humans to identify and interact between themselves.

Why AI (marketing name) companies hate humans so much?

With new tech, "people need some time acclimating to what ‘private’ means to them, & if they haven’t looked at that (Meta AI) firehose discovery feed, they might not think through what ‘public’ means in this context,” EFF’s @Thorin told @huffingtonpost huffpost.com/entry/meta-ai-dis

@hrcerq @fantasminha @humanista

In Italy, there was previously an offer providing unlimited gigabytes for chats and social media. However, antitrust regulations deemed it anti-competitive, leading to the removal of such options for ISPs.

The EU enforces strict laws for digital services, classifying WhatsApp as a gatekeeper. As a result, WhatsApp is required to establish an interoperability service that allows other apps to communicate with its APIs.

I can better understand your thoughts now. Your country is literally held hostage by Meta.

@fantasminha Don't think that the situation here in Italy is different. Worse is better, for some things people still use FAX. People don't care that their lives are held hostage by big tech. I changed my perspective after reading the book Surveillance Capitalism. Keep fight!

Iran warns citizens against using #WhatsApp and #Telegram

Iran has urged its citizens to refrain from using WhatsApp, Telegram, and other "location-based applications," claiming these platforms are among Israel's primary tools for identifying and targeting individuals. The Iranian state agency Irib reported this warning in light of "recent targeted assassinations, including those of scientists." The agency emphasized that evidence suggests the Israeli regime utilizes cell phones to locate targets within Iran. Consequently, citizens are advised not only to avoid these apps but also to turn off their cell phones while moving and to refrain from bringing them to sensitive locations, as reported by CNN.

@fantasminha

This is what I do:

Need to buy something?
Buy locally or online through the company website.

Need support?
I call them or have them call me back.
Chat support these days is run by stupid LLMs.
It's better to talk to a real person.

Need to talk to someone about work?
Here's the real problem: If the company really wants me to use WhatsApp, they need to give me a phone with a work number.

Need to make an appointment?
I call them.

Need to talk to someone?
Signal.
I moved everyone I care about on Signal.
If I need to contact someone I don't know, which is very rare, I just call them.
This doesn't solve the problem of data sovereignty but right now Signal is the best way to move people out of WhatsApp. It's a temporary solution.

@fantasminha I know. I live in Italy. Here, the government institutions and private companies still use Facebook to send updates to citizens and "customers".

We have the cheapest internet mobile fees in the world, after Israel.
100 GB a month for 5€, but the latest offers doesn't include unlimited SMSs anymore.

SMSs are paid, WhatsApp is free™, or maybe not.

The problem is always digital sovereignty.

What will happen if Trump doesn't like Brazil anymore and signs an executive order, one of the many, that orders American companies to stop operating in your country?

Will you loose everything you described?

The main problem is that digital-divide has been solved using smartphones, and WhatsApp is the cheapest way to do this.

I don't know, Meta probably paid Brazilian's ISPs to boost the use of the app.

@tusharhero @kashhill Exacly. "Hallucination" is just another marketing term like AI. It is a term used as an excuse by the manufacturer to wash their hands in the cases mentioned in the article.

@cwebber Never forget that LLM chatbots, like other digital products from big tech companies, use the "hooked model" and variable reward to form the habit. Variable reward is extreme. It uses the same mechanics as slot machines, basically.

Listen up Mastodonians, because this is important:

Right now we have a unique chance to rise up and hit back against Zuckerberg and Musk. Because italian filmmaker @_elena and her friends have made an OUTSTANDING short film, which explains why people should quit the fascist social networks and come join us in the fediverse.

Hit the fascists where it hurts — make this go viral by watching it and liking it on YouTube, then hit the share button and share it everywhere!

@kashhill This situation arises when everyone endorses a stupid statistically typed text generator that lacks understanding of its output. Hallucinations are inherent to the technology of #LLMs and cannot be completely eliminated.
People think they have finally found God in this. This makes me lose faith in humanity.
