I'm following the Finnish election night here in Denmark on my phone via Finland's state broadcaster YLE - it's presented in Swedish, too. No international limiting or anything, just pure and excellent public service from YLE to everyone. Kiitos, tack, thanks!

@WConcertHall Stunning performances by this outstanding vocal group. Try the Alma Mahler songs (arr. Gottwald), just exquisite.

@pvonhellermannn @eyebee Great to hear! Farinelli is still a popular piece being performed around in Denmark, but I think we need a new, complete recording.

@eyebee @pvonhellermannn
Sorry I mixed up two posts on Danish composers! 😵 For Emil Reesen, try the orchestral rhapsody Himmerland or songs from the operetta Farinelli.

@eyebee @pvonhellermannn Hope you will like it! Try some of his powerful orchestral works, "Helios", the Symphony no. 4 or the fizzy Maskarade overture.

@bodhipaksa Great to hear! Gibson was a very convincing Nielsen interpreter - not all conductors get the unorthodox style of this music, but in general Nielsen has been very lucky in finding understanding in UK. That goes for the orchestras, conductors, critics, musicologists and not least the audiences.

I can't recommend this ressource highly enough: All works by Carl Nielsen in the new critical edition, available for free download incl. detailed prefaces in English and Danish kb.dk/en/find-materials/collec

Fascinating footage, previously unknown to me: A brother of the composer Carl Nielsen reminisces his famous sibling. Recorded in 1956 (in Danish), 25 years after Carl Nielsen's death. "When we were children, we had no idea about his special talents. But Dad liked his early compositions." youtube.com/watch?v=cI2pZ50bXs #classicalmusic #Danmark #Denmark #composer

My new book is out this week: A biography of Danish composer/conductor Emil Reesen (1887-1964). Reesen was an extremely popular and all-embracing musician, working in cabarets as well as the opera house. He conducted symphony orchestras, introduced jazz music in Denmark, composed stage music for Shakespeare's plays, ballets, film scores and hit songs. Today he is remembered first of all for the operetta Farinelli (1942), a cornucopia of esprit and great tunes.

@ggmartin That sounds like serious collecting! I love those individual record covers with retailer names and advertisements.

The Faroe Islands - hard to think of any other nation this size (population: 52.000) with an annual, full scale symphonic New Year's Concert on national tv. Watch here (and as a bonus you get to hear spoken Faroese, one of the rarest languages in Europe)

Old music shops - they don't make them like that anymore. This picture dates from 1938 but the shop looked the same when I was a music loving teenager in the 1980s. The company also built pianos, and their instruments were found in every school around here. I last had contact with shop owner / piano maker Mr Knudsen in 2000. He was 90, still working as a piano tuner and kept record of every piano he had ever tuned.

@RouxJ It is correct that Queen Margrethe II has withdrawn as patron of the award, but the quote is not by her, but by Margaretha Ullström, chairman of the Swedish IBBY comitee for children's litterature. Furthermore the famous Danish author's name is Andersen, not Anderson. kristeligt-dagblad.dk/danmark/

What you see on this photo is not from the Empire Strikes Back.

No, it is German police protecting a coal mine excavator in #Lützerath - a village planned to be demolished by the energy company RWE to extract coal that is not even needed for the energy security of Germany.
