Big Think interviewed Anne-Laure Le Cunff, I like the idea of little experiments that we can use in our lives, to keep our curiosity alive:

Yaaay! 🎉
My new Spanish books are here. Started re-learning Spanish last year, and my next class begins at the end of the month.

Fun fact: it helps me understand my own language better too, especially the grammar, which I never liked when I was in school.

Another fun fact: English, as the foreign language that I primarily use is almost always trying to “overwrite” words in Spanish.

Three Spanish language textbooks are displayed. The focus is on "GramĂĄtica BĂĄsica del Estudiante de EspaĂąol A1-B2" with a blue cover featuring wooden blocks labeled "G," "B," and "E." Two additional green and grey books are behind the first one. Both of them are books for a class of Spanish, B1 level.

I really like thinking about the ecosystems in #space , especially in the #solarpunk context of being aware of our surroundings, microbiomes etc.

Just please don't make it about the aesthetics only, I don't want to see a hundred illustrations / stories about potted plants floating on the ISS. I want more stories like the Expanse's Ganymede Station's infrastructure.

Since finding out about Marginala Search, I’ve been using its “Explore” (marginalia-search.com/explore) section as a way to discover interesting sites - and there are lots of them! -, and I remembered how much I liked StumbleUpon and how many random things I learned just going through the sites it recommended. I wonder if search engines have become anti-discovery, anti-learning in the meantime.

Surely this new video won't make me seem like a crank.

I'm reading "Seven Pillars of Science", by John Gribbin, a small book, but packed with information.

It made me think about the gaps that I have in my knowledge, how little we were taught - or how little I understood, or both - in school about chemistry, physics, biology etc. and how much I still want to learn, and how important is to always be curious.

Also, probably this book would be a great starting point for someone who's interested in the history of sciences.

We had a few days of constant snowing, something that has become increasingly rare in Romania. On one evening, the park was full of people who were taking walks, playing, and just enjoying the snow. This is how the park looked like:

There is a lot of snow on the trees and the ground. One of the trees bends down a bit.A green, wooden construction near a small bridge. It is snowing, and on top of the construction there is a thick layer of snow. Everything else is covered in snow too, and it is still snowing.

I had two repositories on GitHub that I wanted to change their visibility from public to private. I had to confirm three times that I wanted to do this, although I was the only person watching the repositories. I think it makes sense to be extra-careful in corporate environments or with larger repositories, but otherwise it feels like you’re being told that you don’t know what you’re doing.

Speaking of this, what I found interesting today is the fact that I couldn't find anything - pun intended. The results I got were mostly AI generated & neither one was useful. DuckDuckGo did the job, though.

Read an article that said that NVIDIA's CEO is advising people to not go into Computer Science, as AI is going to make this field (and software developers) obsolete. Hyping AI sells graphics cards, I presume?

So, having read the Bluesky blog posts + Platformer, it looks to me like Bluesky is:

1. running a big content moderation team on their own pre-open-federation servers (they're technically federating internally, but you can't run your own instance yet)

2. building out mod tools for server admins to use once federation opens

3. layering on a lot of user-controlled stuff that will run on top of server mods

I think *on principle*…those are all good things to do. (Execution will matter.)

@asci Should I worry, in that case? :))

2024-02-06

@asci I agree with you if the company is just starting out and can't afford hiring multiple roles, but in this case this was a multinational company. Probably the pay is for a frontend developer role, but with the responsibilities of a full-stack developer.

2024-02-06

@laskov Yeah, I agree with you, some database knowledge is expected. Not sure about Docker either - although I used it, but not extensively -, and especially Kubernetes and AWS or Azure.

2024-02-06

I was browsing Linkedin a few days ago and went to a job posting for a Senior Frontend Developer. Among the requirements for this job: AWS/Azure. Another job post asking for DBMS, Docker and Kubernetes 'expert knowledge'. Is frontend development turning into fullstack or devops, and why is this happening?
