Much of this commentary builds on the @qutdmrc submission to the current federal parliamentary committee on social media and Australian society - which we've made available here: https://eprints.qut.edu.au/251522/
@james Very kind offer James -- I actually went direct to the source to ask for a copy and have been gifted a couple of physical editions, but this is a beaut tip for the future (if I can wrangle another story in there hah)
If you're in Australia and you know where to get a copy of the International print edition of the New York Times, I would be indebted to you greatly. I tried about 7 newsagents across Sydney last week to no avail. I may be too late.
🦌 Today's New York Times Great Read is a story I've been writing in my brain for a few years now, about a 'silly deer game' and the man who has been building it since he was a kid. It's about growing up, making art, video games and life.
This is The Long, Long Way to the Woods.

@yala This is so compelling! I had never seen it before. What a great choice. Thank you.
@dc A legit ALL TIMER. Have had this bookmarked for years and already use it, but glad to know I am not the only one!
Very big Corpse Says It's Not Dead Yet As it's Being Lowered Into The Earth energies happening with Joseph Biden. Give it up.
Hard relaunching the Mastodon with a query. If you're an avid #sciencejournalism reader, I want to see the best science journalism stories you've read. It's for a little project. Please send.
@thomasconnor Three months later... Hell yeah!
me at 16 years: studying the lore of Kingdom Hearts for clues about KHII and posting in PS2 forums

New: Talking to Aus game developers this year I started hearing a phrase: "Survive until '25"
Wrote about the no good year, why many have struggled, some success stories and optimism... and what the outlook is for 2024 and beyond.
Don't like to make predictions... so I won't.
Been trying real hard to track down how this error was made but have been stonewalled by Scopely, the developer of the game.
Scopely didn't respond to questions about ICIP and consultation
PR said: "We are disappointed to learn that the inclusion of the Lizard Man overall in the album was not an accurate representation and didn't live up to the standards we set for ourselves."
New: Monopoly Go, the biggest mobile game in 2023, w $1b+ revenue, used a Dreamtime story as part of a seasonal promotion. It referenced "Mount Ularu" before being changed to Uluru.
Many thanks to my colleague Abby Richards for helping shine a light on this.
Earlier this year I did a bloody fab residency at IST Austria, a beautiful campus just north of Vienna with some really amazing research going on.
They're looking for science journalists to visit for three months again. It was such a great experience I want to apply again, but alas... I can't. You should!
It's a paid residency and I think the institute would really benefit from people in the global south visiting!
Here's the link: https://ist.ac.at/en/institute/residencies/
Appreciate shares from the #science and #journalism community pleaaaase!
Interesting first year for #SXSWSydney.
A lot of consternation about the line ups and the platinum passes not really helping people get into sessions with huge demand. Charlie Brooker, for instance, was closed off to at least... 500 or 600 people waiting in line.
The Games Festival elements were way too far away from the centre of the festival, in Darling Harbour. Felt like a little bit disrespect, a little bit... don't care enough? I'm not sure.
It was great helping someone whose work I really respect @dctrjack put together this radio story on the climate impacts of @gutefabrik new game Saltsea Chronicles. Have a listen https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/perth-breakfast/saltsea-chronicles-climate/102973064 #videogames #climateaction
Hiya!
In late September, I was voted in as President of the Science Journalists Association of Australia.
I'm taking over from the masterful, indefatigable, legendary, delightful Founding President Bianca Nogrady.
Bianca -- and all the founders and committee members over the years -- have done such an incredible job at building a community of science journalists since kicking this all off in 2019. I'm delighted she tapped me to carry the fire for SJAA through its next phase.
I have some big goals. I want to see science journalism in this country thrive by giving opportunities to young writers, creating pathways for people to make this amazing career their full-time job, helping improve the quality of an already outstanding field in this specialist beat in Oz and just building on that sense of community.
If you're a science journalist in Australia and you want to join up, you can sign up as a member at https://sjaa.org.au/
