BREAKING: Petrina's Emergency Defence trial begins at Perth Magistrates Court.

Petrina pled not guilty after blocking the road leading into Woodside's Burrup Hub with a boat in 2024, on the grounds that her actions were in proportion to the emergency created by Woodside's emissions.

Her trial begins today, which could serve to achieve climate protest rights in Western Australia.

Outside court this morning, Petrina said:

"Woodside's emissions are directly putting us in danger, destroying climate and culture, and we should have the right to stop it.

We only have people power, so that's why I'm here on trial today."

Support Petrina by staying tuned as her trial plays out, and donating to Disrupt Burrup Hub for legal costs.

Climate activist, @disrupt_burrup_hub campaigner and @socialistallianceoz member Petrina Harley outside the Perth Magistrates Court this morning ahead of her landmark trial to fight charges after courageously blocking the one road leading in and out of the Woodside’s Burrup Hub last year.

Petrina will plead the emergency defence before Perth Magistrates Court, and if found not guilty will secure the legal right to climate protest in Western Australia.

Disrupt Burrup Hub said: “The emergency defence argues that a person who broke the law did so in proportion to a legitimate emergency.

“In this case the emergency is clear: the climate crisis is here, and Woodside’s Burrup Hub —the biggest fossil fuel project in the Southern Hemisphere — IS contributing to climate-related deaths with no end in sight.”

Governments had to pay $80B to the #FossilFuel industry. 🌍 2,600+ #InvestmentTreaties still allow this. If countries #defossilize without tackling #ISDS, billions could be lost in claims. ➡️ We demand legal reform so public funds fuel #ClimateAction, not corporate payouts.

Vienna figured out the cheat code: tackle climate change AND housing crisis simultaneously. Solar panels, geothermal heating, thick insulation, and $700 rent for a large apartment. One resident says they don't even need AC because it's never too hot or cold. Vienna playing life on easy mode.

What is the response to Global Warming?

liberal environmentalism

Global Warming is a topic that has captured the attention of many scientists and experts in the environment in recent years. This phenomenon, caused to a large extent by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, has led to a significant increase in average temperature on Earth. As this problem continues to increase, it becomes increasingly urgent to find an effective response to Global Warming.

The importance of addressing Global Warming

Global Warming has multiple negative consequences for our planet and for our society in general. Climate changes have led to an increase in extreme climatic events, such as more intense hurricanes, prolonged droughts and mortal heat waves. In addition, the melting of polar caps has contributed to the increase in sea level, threatening many coastal communities worldwide. To protect our planet and avoid future catastrophes, it is crucial to address Global Warming effectively.

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

One of the most important responses to Global Warming is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. These gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), are mainly released by burning fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas. To reduce these emissions, it is necessary to adopt more clean and renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar and hydroelectric energy. It is also essential to promote energy efficiency in all areas of our lives, from transport to housing and industry.

The importance of renewable energy

The transition to renewable energy sources is vital to combat Global Warming. Renewable energy, unlike fossil fuels, does not emit greenhouse gases during its generation. Wind energy, for example, uses the force of the wind to generate electricity, while solar energy takes advantage of the radiation of the sun. These clean energy sources are abundant and are not exhausted, which makes them a sustainable option for the future.

To promote the adoption of renewable energy, it is important to invest in the research and development of more efficient and affordable technologies. In addition, governments and companies must implement policies and programs that promote the transition to a low carbon economy. This includes fiscal incentives for renewable energy projects and stricter regulations on polluting emissions.

Promotion of energy efficiency

Another key component in the response to Global Warming is the promotion of energy efficiency in all sectors. Energy efficiency refers to the optimization of energy use, thus reducing the amount of energy necessary to perform certain tasks. This can be achieved by adopting more efficient technologies, such as low energy consumption appliances and LED lighting systems.

Energy efficiency also implies changes in our daily habits and behaviors. Turn off the lights when they are not needed, using public transport instead of private vehicles and reducing hot water consumption are just some examples of actions that can contribute to the reduction of energy use.

Adaptation to climate change

In addition to emission reduction, it is also necessary to address adaptation to climate change. Although measures are taken to combat Global Warming, some changes in the weather are already inevitable. It is important to be prepared and develop strategies to face the negative impacts of these transformations.

Adaptation to climate change implies a series of measures, such as strengthening coastal infrastructure to deal with floods, implement more efficient water management systems for droughts and establish emergency plans to deal with extreme climatic events. It is also essential to promote sustainable agricultural practices that are resistant to climate change and promote the conservation of natural ecosystems, which act as carbon sinks.

Conclusion

Global Warming is an urgent challenge facing our planet. To find an effective response to this problem, it is necessary to address both the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to climate change. The transition to renewable energy sources and the promotion of energy efficiency are important steps in the right direction. However, the collaboration of governments, companies and citizens is also required to implement policies and behavioral changes that allow us to protect our planet and guarantee a sustainable future for generations to come.
