Absolutely loving the WNBA this year. Top-notch athletes, incredible poise and effort, and jaw-dropping plays. I could watch every minute of every game!
The one gripe I have, though, is that players are *constantly* complaining about the refs. Somehow that has made it into the culture (probably imitating the male players in their sport). It needs to go.

If you look up "hypocrisy" in the dictionary, you'll see an image with Trump leading a "Lock Her Up!" chant on one side, and the Signal fiasco (together with nuclear secrets in Mar-a-Lago bedrooms) on the other.
On the playground, a young child is being beaten up by an older, bigger bully. The child is valiant in his attempts to withstand the onslaught, but no one offers to help: the other students stand transfixed by the action.
A few minutes later, the Principal sees what's going on, and pushes through the crowd. Instead of breaking up the fight, though, the Principal joins the bully in beating up the overwhelmed child.

I'll give you 5-to-1 odds that at some point on Monday, Donald Trump -- furious that the late Martin Luther King Jr. is occupying some of the attention on "Trump's big day" -- will make some ridiculous remark like "I've done more for the blacks than anybody in this country, including MLK."

In general, I seek to understand the reality we live in and try to figure out how to improve it. This involves far too many details and unfortunately I tend to engage in all kinds of side quests instead of working on what matters the most.

I'm really not looking to have an extended debate about this, but I feel that with respect to the academic environment I'm familiar with (the UK) that really isn't a description I recognise. I don't think UK academic departments are 'vertical' nor do I see pivotal BDFLs making or breaking people's careers in the way you describe.
