i am not saying they are "not smart", i am saying that smartness as a concept conceals how the world actually works - that societies and processes and organizations and tools are what "make people smart" - and that these people are part of a rotten, sick, deluded society/organization with fundamentally flawed processes and frameworks for evaluating reality, which prominently include "the concept of smartness".

when the social-economic maelstrom that is the current LLM hype wave fizzles or collapses there's going to be so much "how could so many smart people be so wrong?" and it's imperative you do not accept their framing of themselves as "smart people" - they are, in judgment and values and intellect, deeply compromised from living inside a machine that harms humanity for profit.

If I started counting brilliant things in Skin Deep, I'd never stop. But:
Once you've crawled through enough of its vents, mantled up into weird gaps, you realize Nina Pasadena's bunk back in her habitat might be characterization, a partial answer to "How does anyone live like this?" - fast-forwarding through life in cryo, every waking day a new Die Hard. Nina feels safe squishing into this awkward recess halfway up the wall. At the point it feels normal to you, you understand her world better.

@pikuma I have long held the belief that vast numbers of people have been failed early on in life by educational systems that did not find a way to engage their curiosity. An appetite for learning and the joy of discovery come from nurturing the spark of curiosity - I was an endlessly curious child, and I was given opportunities to feed it with trips to the library. But I know a lot of kids are told to be quiet instead, or given distractions rather than letting them explore.
