Hey vis.social!

Our current server expenses are about $350 per month, and I am personally covering about $100 of that. I need to see what I can to to adjust our hosting, and see if I can bring those costs down. Which have been rising faster than usual, recently.

It's not media/image storage. It looks like it's connectivity and popularity

But in the mean time, would be great if a few more of our community members would chip in to help us cover our server expenses. vis.social/about

@alarith I’ve seen something similar in the RER B in Paris. Trains disappear from the list once it’s considered too late to catch the train without running from that screen to the platform. Different screens in the same station will show a different list.

If you understand this joke, you’re my kind of people. Even better if it has you literally laughing out loud (as it did for me).

This is an appreciation thread for EuterPen, a multimodal music notation system by @Vincent_Cavez et al. It aims to support the non-linear process of exploration during composition.

It's the most sensitive and imaginative academic HCI design work I've seen in quite some time!

ACM Creativity & Cognition is happening online next week in Gather. I am the virtual platform chair and I have spent WAY too many hours building a conference space that evokes London, as the 2026 conference will be in person in London.

Fully virtual conferences are accessible to all - sustainable, affordable, equitable, better for folks with caring responsibilities and those unable to travel due to VISA issues. C&C is fully virtual every other year. Join us! @acm_creativitycognition #SIGCHI

@Gte the day I have to replace my touchbar MacBook Pro (with a real escape key!), I will be sad.

@harrisongoldstein congratulations, Harry!

@plumtrie @luj or « you’ve got this! » but I agree, I don’t know of anything quite like « bon courage »

@luj « keep your chin up » ?

@samgoree @mcnuttandrew from a research perspective: someone who can actually participate in the building of interactive systems or the tools we use to do so, or related topics. In other words, being able to contribute to their design, while important, is insufficient. From a teaching perspective: someone who can participate in the computer science department’s core teaching needs.

2025-05-16

@mcnuttandrew too subtle, especially in the context of a multidisciplinary group. But ain’t nothing wrong with a criticism without a solution. It’s still valuable to recognize, identify, and call out a problem.

2025-05-16

@mcnuttandrew I want to agree with you, but as someone running a hiring campaign for a « technical HCI » position, how would you advertise it?

And there it is folks! [Not]Soulver for #OpenStep is now Universal binary that runs natively on my M1 MacBook Air! Wow, what a journey! I will still be polishing some small problems but I have now accomplished my goal!

I am now running a native OpenStep app written in Objective-C with:
❌ No Swift
❌ No Automatic Reference Counting
❌ No Property Synthesization
❌ No Blocks
❌ No Fast Enumeration
❌ No Collection Literals
❌ No Dispatch Queues

Quite amazing that Apple has been able to maintain source compatibility in Foundation and AppKit for 30 years!

Please try it yourself! It’s not notarized (that will come later), but it should run on your Apple Silicon Mac.

@luj @yuka if I recall correctly, you can get that day comped back to you (journée de recoup), sort of like getting credited an RTT.
