I'm going to try to use this platform more actively from now on, so in addition to the intro pinned to my profile, here's a post with some things I've written that might be of interest to people out there. Two blogposts, an academic article, and something for a broader audience.
On using non-commercial tools for writing: samgrinsell.hcommons.org/2022/
On applying for UK postdocs: samgrinsell.hcommons.org/2022/
On images of the first Aswan Dam and colonial visions of nature:

As we’re getting another new influx of #histodons (as the Fediverse history community is known), it might be worth recalling the histodons list <docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d>. It’s pretty out of date, as it’s been largely neglected since the last big influx in autumn 2022, but if you’re new here it might help you to find your people.

I have to post this #iceage masterpiece from time to time:
A tiny (3.7 cm) but amazing figurine of a woolly mammoth carved in mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago.
Found in the Vogelherd cave on the Swabian Jura, south-west Germany.

@evelyntheriault Yes, I was in elementary school at the time and remember people talking about the choices and seeing pictures of the different options. There was some annoyance at the choice of the maple leaf, as it was felt to represent only a small portion of the country (we were too far north for maples, for instance), but over the years I think everyone has embraced the design.

Black and white photo of a young white boy dress up for his studio portrait and sitting in a toy wagon. In his lap he holds a shorthaired white and ginger tabby, and both look at the camera with nearly identical serious expressions.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: this absolutely stunning #Roman ribbed bowl was unearthed fully intact with little to no wear during excavations in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Monochrome ribbed bowls made of brightly coloured glass were very popular throughout...the Roman empire in the 1st century AD.
They were also exported beyond the empire’s eastern frontier and have been found in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.

THE HBC BRIGADES, 1826:
"We allowed the Horses their customary rest after which we proceeded at one o'clock pm, and at dusk reached the Traverse of the North branch of Thompson's River, where of course we Encamped. The roads were equally as bad as those we passed through yesterday, and this was the longest day's march we have yet performed -- about 30 miles. We here found the old Chief & his Family who furnished us with an ample supply of fresh Salmon for supper. #HBC #History #HistoricJourney

This is the North Thompson River up which the HBC Brigades ran. In the foreground, burned trees from a forest fire still stand. In the distance the sun shines on steep hillsides with trees at the bottom where the trail ran. In the distance, more hills, heavily trees but likely more gentle for the horses.
