@vaclovas @vilisas O Zapad'as jau prasidėjo? Gal čia susiję?

Prieš porą savaičių viena pozicija man netiko dėl naudojamos technologijos (turiu asmeninę istoriją). Pagalvokite...".

Pagalvojau gal jai pasiūlyti "nusileisti" už 50 EUR/h.

"Younger people will have trouble picturing this, but #Google used to nurture an image of being the “good one” among megacorps; they championed #openstandards (except when they didn’t), supported #opensource projects (until they backstabbed them), and used language that corporate wasn’t supposed to use, like #dontbeEvil (until they,in a true dark comedy move, retracted that motto).
I was always an anarchist, abstractly, but in many ways Google was my political awakening."

At first I thought "wow, there's a #privacy event in #Vilnius but then I read the post.

I'm not a privacy expert, but this is the second year in a row that I'm attending the Baltic Privacy and Innovation Summit n Vilnius, organized by LDAPA and Sorainen. Great panelists, great presentations - it's one of the conferences I'd recommend to anyone working in tech.

This year, however, I left the conference with a very bleak feeling about the future of the tech sector, mainly due to several ideas, thoughts, or remarks shared by panelists during the discussions:
- GDPR overreach: Its application has gone into overdrive — even data that a business cannot reasonably link to a physical person, and has no means to, is now considered personal data. Or worse - indirectly identifiable personal data. But if its indirect, shouldn't it be non-personal? Crazy thought, I know.
- No other laws apply: In tech, it's as if only the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive exist. Nothing else.
- Fragmentation in enforcement: The European Commission wants to deregulate, yet the application of laws is left to national authorities. The EU has 27 national data protection authorities, but Germany alone has one federal and 17 state-level authorities - each potentially with a different view on privacy. Some regulators engage with businesses to guide GDPR compliance; others prefer to “regulate” by imposing fines. And if you don't like it - go litigate. So much for the EU single market.

So, I downloaded Gnome-based #PikaOS instead, and it at least gives me a somewhat familiar shell (sans the dock).
But if anything, PikaOS' default wallpapers are absolutely lovely. Here are just a few of them.

Bruce Schneier testified at a hearing yesterday titled "The Federal Government in the Age of Artificial Intelligence"

"You all need to assume that our adversaries have copies of *all the data* DOGE has exfiltrated and have established access into *all the networks* that DOGE has removed security controls from.

And your data can be used against you..."

Written Expert Testimony to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Hearing titled “The Federal Government in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” Bruce Schneier Fellow and Adjunct Lecturer Harvard Kennedy School June 4, 2025 Data security breaches present significant dangers to everyone in the United States, from private citizens to corporations to government agencies to elected officials. Over the past four months, DOGE’s approach to data access has massively exacerbated the risk. DOGE employees have accessed and exfiltrated data from a variety of government agencies in order to, in part, train AI systems. Their actions have weakened security within the federal government by bypassing and disabling critical security measures, exporting sensitive data to environments with less security, and consolidating disparate data streams to create a massively attractive target for any adversary. Data consolidation might seem harmless or even positive, but we have to understand what’s at stake when our data gets consolidated. Data is power. Any entity, whether public or private, that holds data about individuals has some ability to understand, predict, and manipulate their behavior. For example, major tech companies use people’s individual data to deliver advertising that shapes what we buy and even what we believe...

folks, could someone please suggest a mobile (for android) #firefox fork / config capable of automatically engaging reader mode for every web page / site on load?

i know there are plugins for that and i’ve tried some of them but a) they don’t always work even on «desktop» versions of firefox (at least for me) and b) they simly don’t work at all on my phone.

almost forgot: no google play please: f-droid or sideloading open source apps only.

What's been lost...
Entomologists from Krefeld, Germany, collected flying insects for two weeks in August 1994 (left) and—at the same site, with an identical trap— in August 2016 (right). Similar data from 63 German protected areas overall gave a shocking result: a 76 percent drop in insect biomass between 1989 and 2016.
It has worsened significantly in the past 9 years.
Photographed at Entomological Society of Krefeld

Two cylindrical 2 liter lab glasses, both containing a light brown fluid with a mass of insects at the bottom. The left glass gas more than 1500 mL of insects, the right glass around 250 mL.
