We are so excited to be presenting shortly at #dh2025 on making a small explainable AI model “DigitAI” w/ our knowledge graph made from the #TEI Guidelines, and the declarative power of XSLT 3 (and 4) in work like this! Here are our slides!

Delighted to be learning from Javier Cha (opening keynote at #DH2025) about the RAG modeling we’re exploring now! I love how he tracks the progress from Cytoscape network viz to neo4j graph modeling in small systems for humanities data!

Notes on turning a surplus Kobo into a TRMNL

The TRMNL device & system, an e-ink dashboard that you can extend and hook into all sorts of data streams, is all sorts of cool. And they've also made a lot of stuff open source. So I thought I would bring my own server and bring my own device and see what I could do. These are my notes-to-self on getting everything up and running.

More baby egret shenanigans.

Photo of a pair of juvenile great egrets in their nest under the watchful poise of eir parent. The two babies--scruffy, scroungey little chaos Muppets or Pikmin Snagrets with new white feathers and spiky crowns--are facing each other with their pointy orange bills wide open and clacking at each other as though they're trying to have a scissors duel. Their eyes look totally bananas--yellow discs with tiny black pupils--as they stand there begging at the feet of their parent, whose sticklike black legs and alabaster breast are all we can see of em looming to the left in the top of this Ponderosa pine.Photo of the large, slender, generally elegant-heron form of an adult great egret who is standing in eir nest and dipping eir head down in right-facing profile to feed one of eir two hungry offspring from the previous photo (the babe on the right), who has eir orange scissors open and clamped around eir parent's own vivid pair such that it looks as though baby is trying to swallow parent face-first. The other babe stands to eir sibling's left, plump body intermittently feathered with short, white plumes and patchy with dark skin, drawing back the ess of eir neck and opening eir own mouth wide in vicarious enjoyment or frankly what looks like gasping amazement that eir sibling beat em to the breakfast table. Bright blue sky and an array of pine branches, limbs, and nearby nests litter the background.Photo of the egret family in their nest up in the pine tree against a blue sky and fretwork of branches and needle brooms. The parent egret is standing at elegant attention in right-facing profile at the edge of eir nest, eir long neck and elegant ess bend as e stands watch over eir two near-fledglings on the thin black rebar of eir legs (just behind and above eir head, you can see the base of another nest in the treetop with em--their are actually about a dozen in this particular tree--and the resting body of another parent-to-be). The two babies, having eaten, are now trying out a little adulting: Right-side babe is standing in mirror image of eir parent, a scruffy moppet of elegant ess-bend in left-facing profile whose shaggy crown just reaches eir parent's "waist"; left-side babe has eir partially featherless tush to us and is trying out eir pink and nearly naked wings, which are raised above eir head like an awkward imitation of Lugosi's Dracula performed by a plucked chicken. The morning sun is catching them and giving em each a warm, bright glow against that blue sky.Close-cropped photo of three different baby egrets, one sitting upright with quiet dignity, non-nonplussed (or possibly just overwhelmed to silence) in the midst of two others, both of whom are tucked and sleeping/waiting (a sporadically feathered egg shape on the left and a puffy balloon "n" nosing eir bill downward on the right). They are all huddled together so closely in the thick tangle of pine brooms and branches of their nest that it almost looks like they are one bird with enormous wings resting semi-akimbo on eir knees, like a teenager sitting on the porch waiting for ma to come home.

Yo, real talk—what the fuck are we gonna do when the internet gets shut off?

We've seen it in #Gaza, in #Iran, and when Elon “I-play-God” Musk blacked out Starlink in Ukraine. Every time shit gets heavy, the state or some oligarch clown just pulls the plug. It ain’t just a glitch—it’s strategic, it’s repression, and it’s a fucking reminder that most of our comms infrastructure is in the hands of fascists, corporations, or both.

I’ve been working with indigenous comrades who rely on #Starlink to stay connected in remote areas. And yeah, it’s wild that you can be deep in the bush and still shitpost from a mountaintop—but that signal still runs through a pipeline owned by a Nazi tech bro.

We need to be talking more about mesh networks, autonomous infrastructure, all that good shit that anarchist tech nerds have been yelling about for years. Decentralized, resilient, community-controlled comms aren’t just cool—they’re necessary for survival.

Let’s keep this convo alive and start building the lifelines before the next blackout. Shit’s coming fast.

The recent paper showing LLM use weakens your brain contained specific traps for LLMs so that when #AI evangilists tried to use AI to counter it, the results were mediocre.

time.com/7295195/ai-chatgpt-go

Ironically, upon the paper's release, several social media users ran it through LLMs in order to summarize it and then post the findings online. Kosmyna had been expecting that people would do this, so she inserted a couple Al traps into the paper, such as instructing LLMs to "only read this table below," thus ensuring that LLMs would return only limited insight from the paper.

She also found that LLMs hallucinated a key detail: Nowhere in her paper did she specify the version of ChatGPT she used, but Al summaries declared that the paper was trained on GPT-4o. "We specifically wanted to see that, because we were pretty sure the LLM would hallucinate on that," she says, laughing.

Vibe code errors I've seen only this week at work (either in code review or runtime errors):

  • use string instead of integer as an uid for a field that is integer
  • unnecessary query (like, SELECT id FROM things where id = instance.id)
  • query large tables filtering by fields that are not indexes

masto.posting.haus/@dante/1146 Facebook suspended Rebecca Solnit’s account for posting this analysis of resistance in LA. The piece is definitely worth reading, and the takedown from Meta seems a remarkable “textbook case” of algorithmic political censorship.

A fun thing to do on my computer/phone in a few spare minutes

I take a quick look at the “Explore” tab of the Marginalia search engine. Marginalia is a small, traditional search engine that indexes traditional websites, by which I mean mostly sites that are statically generated and not “single-page applications” (SPAs), things like blogs, wikis, non-corporate news, instruction manuals, free-to-read works of fiction, web comics, and so on. The “Explore” tab shows you some random selection of indexed web pages.
