Hi, Fediverse and especially #envs pubnixers!

As you might have noticed, I moved my account from @fab to @dan. So it's time for a new #introduction!

I'm very sceptical about the corporate web social media and I always avoided Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and things like that like the plague. But the Fediverse isn't bound to corporate interests, federates and can be self hosted. These things made it interesting. And I was curious, so I made an account on the pleroma.envs.net instance of the envs.net pubnix.

I wanted to join a pubnix for a very long time and did a lot of research for the right one and I think I found the right one with #envs. My fellow pubnixers and tildizens seem to be a bunch of very nice and helpful folks, and I already made a lot of good experiences. But I had to choose the username 'dan', because 'fab' was already taken. So my shell account is now 'dan@envs.net' just like my email address and my webpage, Gopher Hole and Gemini Capsule can be found under the username ~dan. But I still had the @fab Mastodon/ActivityPub account, so I decided now to move to the new account @dan to make all my accounts with the same username on envs.net.

As I told in my previous introduction, I'm an enthusiastic computer, GNU/Linux and *BSD hobbyist, although I never worked in the IT field professionally. I like to tinker around with my little homelab and my own VPS servers running FreeBSD. I'm also interested in the #smolnet / #indieweb. And since Mon, 12 Jan 2026 I'm a proud member of the envs.net pubnix/tilde, where I can make some experiences on a shared multiuser Linux system with other makers, tinkerers, computer hobbyists and professionals, and other like-minded folks which is very intriguing.

I'm especially at home in the shell and keyboard-centric environments like AwesomeWM, which I use on all of my workstations running Artix Linux (OpenRC). I always prefer simple TUI/CLI programs over bloated GUI applications. My interest in different programming languages is diverse, be it Go, bash/sh, Rust, Python or even Perl. I try to use the language which fits best to the problem. But all I know about computers, Linux, Unix and the *BSDs I've learned-by-doing or to solve a specific problem or need.

I hope to have a lot of fun in the long-run on the envs.net pubnix/tilde, and that we're having a good time together.

That's it for my introduction for now, although I don't know if I'll post regularly on the Fediverse. You can always contact me on XMPP with my JID 'dan@envs.net' or via email too, if you like. So have fun!

Best wishes,
~dan

I set up a website on my pubnix account at the envs.net tilde which I joined on Mon, 12 Jan 2026:

https://dan.envs.net/

I didn't set up a full blown blog but I created a small php script which lists all my Gopher phlog posts with links to the envs.net Gopher-To-Web proxy. So you don't need to leave your webbrowser, if you want to read them. I write all my posts and articles on my Gopher phlog and I'll mainly focus on my experiences and progress on the envs.net pubnix. For the website itself I took some inspiration from the "slash" pages, which are popular in the smolnet/indieweb. Although the site makes some use of PHP it doesn't use any JavaScript, except on my image gallery and a little bit on the guestbook. I adapted the guestbook look to the main site as much as I could and IMO it fits good into my site, which uses the main CSS/styles of the envs.net main page and I like it. The image gallery gets a little out of line with it's style, and it wouldn't be easy to adapt its style to the rest of the page.

There's also an RSS feed file with all new phlog posts with the full text of the last 10 entries, so you should be able to read them in your preferred feed reader without accessing the posts with a gopher browser, if you like.

I'm still a pubnix newbie, but I advance in my abilities to use it fast and it's really fun to work and create with the other tinkerers, makers, hackers, tildizens and like-minded folks.

It would make me really happy, if you would visit my site and drop me a line in my guestbook. :)

Yay! I signed up on my first pubnix ever. I made a shell account at envs.net, which I was already using the Mastodon/ActivityPub service from (this one). Unfortunately the username "fab" was already taken, so I chose "dan" from my real name Daniel. I signed up on Mon, 12 Jan 2026 so I'm a member for a week and 3 days now. If you have at least a little experience with the commandline, then it won't be too hard even for users who never participated with a pubnix. And envs.net is already very well set up right from the beginning.

https://envs.net/
gemini://envs.net/
gopher://envs.net/

I was busily learning and setting things up the last days, but I still have to find my way around a little. All those special gadgets and gizmos that are available to the user are amazing! I've already set up a web page, a Gemini page and a little Gopher Hole with a phlog, which I'll use for publishing about my experiences and learning progress the most. I got also active on the Tildeverse IRC servers with my nick "fab" (not "dan", that was taken) and am mainly hanging around in the #meta and #envs channels (ircs://irc.tilde.chat:6697). I'm not very experienced with IRC and try my best to follow the rules, but if you're nice, then nobody would bite your head off, if you accidently do something wrong. But there were and still are a lot of things I had/have to learn.

Most of the people at envs.net and on the Tildeverse IRC servers are very helpful and friendly. And they're very diverse. A really nice bunch of folks (at least those I already talked to). So if you are in search for a general purpose tilde with a minimalist approach, I can only recommend envs.net.

But if you are new to Pubnixes, I recommend a longer research. They can differ a lot. Some have special interests or purposes, some are especially for LGBTQ people and they may have different demands in participation activity and behaviour. I even found one especially about baking (breadpunks.club). So do your homework before signing up to your first pubnix.

But I can't say often enough, how much fun I had the last week. Setting up, learning, creating. It's great! Here are my links:

https://dan.envs.net/ - This is just an "About and Contacts" page (yet)

gemini://envs.net/~dan/ - This is also mostly a short informational Gemini page

gopher://envs.net/1/~dan/ - This is my Gopher Hole with a phlog. I think this will be my main publishing platform about my adventures and experiences in the Tildeverse. It's maintained with a CLI app called "burrow" by James Tomasino, which is a breeze to use. Some short configuration and you have your Gopher Hole and phlog up and running.

https://gopher.envs.net/envs.net/1/~dan/ - This is a web proxy to my Gopher Hole at envs.net

If you want to write to me concerning my pages or my shell account at envs.net in general, you can write email to '~dan <dan@envs.net>'. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

And if you ever wanted to know how it's like to be part of a multiuser Linux system with cool, friendly and helpful people try a Tilde/Pubnix!

So we spun up a shared debian system a while ago (as a beginning of a sort of #ttrpg #tilde system) and I decided to put a basic but functional #mud on it, just because I liked the idea. (I used #tbamud)

This now seems to consume at least one more person, as he started building his own zone and we had to put the mud discussions into a seperate #irc channel because otherwise it would only be about that.

Yes, we also are using #irc. I feel so l33t.

I've recently gotten hooked to the Gemini protocol. This obsession came about after I learned about the Tildeverse over XMPP, registered for tilde.pink, and started playing with the public_gemini directory. If you can write basic Markdown, you can write Gemtext with minimal differences. It is really easy to create a capsule (webpage) from nothing. As such, I loved it except for one small nitpick.

I am really used to using scripts for fun behaviour. For example, on my own webpage, I usually greet newcomers using their time of day instead of simple greetings like "good to see you" or "hello". I don't have a clue why I prefer this other than "it's funny". However, Gemini doesn't provide any means of scripting in their spec. As such, you cannot script Gemini capsules on most Gemini servers, including gmid which is used by tilde.pink.

I was thinking of solutions for this, and I concluded that I should probably look into templating and scheduled builds for this task. My reasoning for this is that it provides the illusion of scripted behaviour while remaining statically built for the small web. This could also be used in many Gemini servers as it creates Gemtext files from templates. This would make Gemini scriptable while retaining it's purpose.

I'm planning to design this in Ruby, mostly as an influence from Jekyll. If anyone wants to talk about it more with me, please let me know, as I am open to ideas. I also plan to write a post about the Tildeverse when I'm well rested. More specifically, about my thoughts regarding the community.

Just sitting in the bathtub casually discussing making a #ttrpg #tilde server (over #irc no less)

I would say we truly live in the future if I also had coffee brought to me automatically.

I almost ditched my published #GeminiProtocol capsules. Well, and then I saw how fast #Gemini runs using #AmiGemini on #Amiga and #MorphOS. Reason enough to stay with it.

@RuthODay2 @Eilistraee @RuthODay @olliethewobbly @WolfofWords @cwgrody @AlexanderRaine7 @tabletopmania @YakyuNightOwl @APBAreplay @oldladyplays Yeah, for me, probably surf or power pop. I did do an online #radio show for a few months some years ago - I was the on-air sidekick for a political talk show, but ended up taking it over when some real-life happened to the host and she couldn't continue. It was fun and I'd like to do it again, although I do live trivia and music bingo. I've thought about doing a show on #SDF or #tilde, both of which I had accounts on at one point, or perhaps just running a server myself, but it would be a hell of a lot of work for basically no money in return. #podcasting

I have found a use case of my #tilde/#pubnix website. It's to publish my online journal, which contains dated entries longer than a toot/tweet but shorter and less structured or themed than a blog post. I am using simple.css by @kev and a #Python script written by #ChatGPT to export the entries within <article> tags into an #RSS feed. It looks great so far.
