I'm the Accessibility Evangelist at Fable (www.makeitfable.com). I talk about Accessibility, screen readers, blindness, inclusive design, Fable, and more. I'm a life-long blind screen reader user. This is my account for professionally related toots; personal stuff is elsewhere.

I really want to boost your funny images but won't do if you don't alt-text them đ
If you are interested in improving the #accessibility of Mastodon, take a look at the issue queue https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3Aaccessibility+
If there are issues you've found that aren't there, are they part of the instance of Mastodon that you are using, or part of the core open source project? Custom themes can get in the way.
Posting #a11y bugs is important in moving ahead any open source project.
I wish the Sidekiq interface was a bit more accessible. I'd love to see what our little server is doing! Lots of charts but they all just show up as images and random headers that don't really mean much. :drgn_sad:
This seems like an issue that should get a lot more reach than it has. #Accessibility #Mastodon #mastoadmin

Please help!
I've seen a number of posts go by asking about screenreaders and Mastodon compatibility. If looking for a screenreader's guide to Mastodon, this post by @ChangelingMx may be of interest: https://www.starshipchangeling.net/changelings-guide-to-using-mastodon-for-screen-reader-users-chapter-one-introduction/ #DisabledCommunity #screenreader #FediTips #disability

Today I learned that there is a free international standard on how to construct alternative text: https://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-T.701.11-202009-I/en
GitHub is planning voice to code.
Today in the Kitchen at Cake HQ: Config - new templating dialog. Mastodon - fix replies across instances, add option to include CW and text, reply to boosted author, Add visibility for templates. Docs - add sections on interact/secondary interact and more! https://tweesecake.app/changes
Also, how, you may ask, should I write an #alt text for an #image?
Rule of thumb: look at the image and tell your rubber duck, orally, what the image is about.
eg. âPhoto of my cats having a sleep on the couch, cuddlingâ
eg. âA graph that shows a surge in Fediverse users in the last seven daysâ
eg. âA meme with a dog in the middle of a fire, drinking cofeee and saying 'it's fine'â.
Try to describe simply, and write it. More often than not, it's a matter of half a minute.
Because accessibility and image descriptions are a fundamental on mastodon, Iâm getting more strict on not boosting images without descriptions.
I know image-focussed people arenât necessarily keen on writing, but just say what you see. Then people with visuals impairments will hear what you see. Be an #a11y
Still learning the etiquette here but please allow me a rare bit of career talk:
Next week is our annual #Accessibility and #Inclusion conference, #TechSharePro. With over 40 speakers and 100 sessions including #Accessible #Games, #FilmMaking, #Travel and #Tourism, and lived experience of #Neurodiversity.
Iâm really proud of my colleagues at #AbilityNet for putting together such an amazing eventđ

Get excited: Austin Startup Week is next week! Iâm honored to be on a panel with the legendary Sharron Rush in Why #Accessibility Should Be Part of Your MVP on Weds at 3 pm CT.

A small group of #blind people have come together to raise funds, after 11 blind children were killed in a fire at Ugandaâs Salama School for the Blind. This is such a terrible tragedy and there is considerable need. Times are tough right now, but if you have a little to spare and would like to, Iâm sure they would be grateful if you #donate. https://www.gofundme.com/f/eedz7x-help-salama-blind-school-after-devastating-fire?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet
The instance I'm on is lagging a lot these days, between 1 and 2 days.
Please bear me no grudge if I don't answer quickly.
