One of our brightest stars @_elena has created a great Fediverse promotional video. This tour de force is posted across multiple platforms in different languages. It should be obvious promoting the Fediverse is best done by connecting with people not currently on the Fediverse, but some people don't like that it is available on YouTube. We are constantly complaining about tech but I'd like to take a moment to appreciate one tech that I use frequently, every single day. The AirPods Pro 2.

In the beginning the device switching was a bit all over the place but with time, it got really stable and I use it with my Mac and iPhone, going from one to the other without really thinking about it.

This part of not even thinking about, not thinking about connecting and disconnecting from here or there is when tech really gets out of the way, or what some marketers would call "magical”.

If I were to lose my AirPods Pro 2 today, you can bet I'd have another one within a few hours.

I recently decided to return the new 13” M4 iPad Pro (Cellular). As much as I love that incredible screen, the battery life just doesn’t hold up compared to a MacBook Air — and that was a dealbreaker for me.

The whole point of the switch was to reduce the weight I carry daily. My 15” M2 MacBook Air weighs around 1500g, and I was hoping to lighten my load enough to also carry a Switch 2.

On paper, the 13” iPad Pro is a huge win: just 579g. But the moment you add the Magic Keyboard, the weight jumps to about 1250g — almost identical to the M4 13” MacBook Air.

At that point, the MacBook Air just makes more sense. Sure, I’ll miss the stunning display on the iPad, but the Air offers far more flexibility and power for the same weight.

@proji @verge That's the only reason why I have it installed too. I far prefer Telegram, iMessage and Signal, but personally I just don't like Meta. This news about the summary using their AI is pretty telling in my opinion. The size of the app is not big enough to “contain their AI” and have it running locally like Apple Intelligence. At the very least it opened a can of worms (again) for privacy.

@verge If WhatsApp messages are E2E Encrypted, how can a third party (Meta AI) read and summarize. I guess they just showed their cards. It may be E2E Encrypted, but they sure have the keys to read your stuff.

There was a documentary shoot, 4 days. Cameras and sound jam synced properly 🙏

Half of it is verité amongst several people meeting for the first time then talking on a table.

Task for person 1:
- transcode everything for Avid
- create proxies for FCP (I’m keeping everything on DaVinci and FCP in parallel with Avid)
- sync everything and create multicams
- Create timeline with cam A and B side by side
- Captions on screen (German)
- Captions on screen (English, translated from German)

Tasks for person 2:
- import to Avid
- sync everything on Avid
- Captions on screen (German)
- Captions on screen (English, translated from German)
- Script sync

Total amount of time taken by person 1 for all their tasks: 28h counting time the time the person is not working overnight. Just start to finish.

Total amount of time taken by person 2 for all their tasks: 6 days and counting.

This is a good piece of data on a “normal” distributed team.

@stooovie Well… imagine what will happen when AI will truly be AI. I watched only the first few minutes and it’s already bonkers.

Why is it ok for citizens and the whole government of the US to have their president so blatantly lying every single day? Why is that acceptable? Any other president would’ve had far greater consequences, but why not the current president? Just a random thought while I’m catching up with news.

@stooovie Yeah, I think that’s the difference, in the past my iPads were not main devices, but now I’m replacing my MacBoom Air with it, so I felt like the hype of staying on the beta wouldn’t be worth this time. I guess I’m finally listening to myself. 😅

@jackdaniyel Which one did you move to? I just moved everything to porkbun and finding it excellent and cheap.

@stooovie Well, can’t believe you’re not complaining more about the beta honestly. Good thing I installed the beta first thing. Too buggy to be playing around. I’ll definitely keep the public stable 18.5 installed. I can wait until final release. =)

@stooovie Did you notice the difference in the screen? I watch a bunch of Dolby Vision/HDR content. Just wish I could get the nano texture one.

@stooovie It’s a shame in a way, and one of the uses will end up being watching stuff in bed 😅 on the other hand audio sharing has been working great for me and my wife, so we could potentially use earphones if we wanted better sound and still stay in bed.

@stooovie Trueeeeee! What I’m looking forward is how much light it is compared to the M1. Plus, first time I’ll have the cellular version, will take advantage of my Vodafone tariff that includes cellular for two more devices.
